Job Summary
Lead and shape the future of Clinical Pharmacy for Medicine at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust. This senior leadership role drives the development of clinical pharmacy services across a range of medical specialities, improving patient flow, service efficiency and medicines optimisation.
As Principal Pharmacist for Medicine you will lead a senior pharmacy team, collaborate with multidisciplinary leaders, and influence service transformation, digital development and the future direction of pharmacy services across the Trust and wider healthcare system.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the Clinical Pharmacy Service for Medicine, providing clear professional and operational direction.
* Manage and support a team of senior pharmacists, helping them to develop and perform at their best.
* Identify and lead improvements to services, focusing on patient flow, quality and efficiency.
* Promote safe, effective and cost‑conscious use of medicines across your areas of responsibility.
* Lead medicines governance, ensuring standards are maintained and issues are addressed.
* Build strong working relationships with clinical and operational colleagues across the Trust and wider system.
* Support the development of digital systems, including electronic prescribing.
* Contribute to the training, supervision and development of pharmacy staff and the wider workforce.
* Maintain workload and performance records, using key performance indicators to identify and manage variances.
* Plan and coordinate changes necessary for the further development of Clinical Pharmacy services, including negotiation for required resources.
* Lead pharmacy work streams to support local and national initiatives and deliver a 7‑day pharmacy clinical service.
* Advise on matters relating to Clinical Pharmacy to ensure safe and effective practices are developed and adhered to.
Qualifications
* Master’s Degree in Pharmacy.
* Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
* Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development (CPD).
* Registered independent prescriber.
* Postgraduate qualifications in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent.
Experience
* Extensive experience as a qualified hospital pharmacist, with management experience at band 8a level or above.
Skills and Knowledge
* Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
* Evidence of leadership skills and abilities.
* Capability to manage equipment resources within the Pharmacy Department.
* Capability to manage the pharmacy service within given financial and staffing constraints.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Ability to convey complex information to clinical staff and patients.
Contract Details
* Band 8b
* Salary: £66,582 to £77,368 per year.
* Fixed‑term contract – 18 months.
* Full‑time.
* Location: Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, Moat Road, Walsall, WS2 9PS, United Kingdom.
