The Highways team, part of the Highways & Waste service are responsible for ensuring that Gateshead is a safe and attractive place in which people can live, work and spend free time. From waste strategy, including collection and recycling to the maintenance of our highways and street lighting. You’ve probably also noticed significant investment in the restoration of the Tyne Bridge, and our Highways team continue to play a pivotal role in that restoration project of a local landmark.

The role of the Mason Pavior is the supervision of others while carrying out Highways construction activities on high value, high profile, major capital works across Gateshead’s highway Network. Meeting site requirements and client requests in a timely manner. Ensuring the availability and functioning of required plant and appropriate materials. Ensuring good housekeeping on site and ensuring Health and Safety standards are adhered to. This requires a flexible, responsive, and high achieving individual.
What you'll do
* Supervise highways construction teams and subcontractors on major capital works, ensuring safe, efficient, highquality delivery.
* Carry out and oversee advanced highways tasks, including kerbing, paving, drainage, concrete work, and natural stone installations.
* Plan and organise daily site operations, ensuring plant, materials, machinery, and equipment are available, safe, and used correctly.
* Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety standards, including good housekeeping, PPE use, RAMS adherence, and the recording/reporting of H&S issues.
* Interpret and work from plans, drawings, and specifications to meet site and client requirements.
* Liaise effectively with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams on all siterelated matters, supporting smooth project progress.
* Assist the Assistant Manager in coordinating and supervising staff, supporting delivery of construction and maintenance programmes.
* Maintain accurate site documentation, including goods orders, service delivery records, and data storage in line with GDPR.
* Support, motivate, and guide team members, helping other trades and contributing to training where required.
What you'll bring
* NVQ or equivalent in relevant trade background.
* Current CSCS Health and Safety Compliance Card or equivalent.
* Hold relevant skill and H&S qualifications to operate relevant plant and machinery.
* A broad knowledge of highways works including traffic management, drainage, street lighting and signage
* Trade background with relevant on-site work experience ideally with some experience of supervising others.
* Experience of working with a wide range of highways materials.
* Experience operating relevant plant and machinery.
* Working in a self-disciplined manner to tight deadlines whilst maintaining a high standard of workmanship
* Effective communication with clients to ensure specification and requirements are met.
* Experience of working to the requirements of the highways permit scheme
* Willingness to undertake specific training associated with the role.
