Overview
A clinician-led neurodevelopmental service is expanding its Autism Assessment provision for adults and children and is seeking experienced Registered Mental Health Nurses (RMNs) to join its assessor team.
The role involves delivering high-quality, evidence-based autism assessments within a robust clinical governance framework and a neuro-affirming, patient-centred approach.
You will be confident managing the full assessment pathway end-to-end, integrating structured tools, clinical interview, developmental history, and behavioural observation, and producing clear, defensible diagnostic reports.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct comprehensive, face-to-face autism diagnostic assessments for adults and/or children in the Leeds clinic
* Complete detailed clinical interviews, functional impact assessments, and neurodevelopmental histories
* Review and integrate collateral information (family, informants, educational/medical records) where available
* Use and interpret screening and assessment tools including AQ10, RAADS, CAT-Q, and AQ50
* Undertake and document structured behavioural observation (e.g. ADOS-2 or agreed alternative)
* Formulate diagnostic outcomes using recognised frameworks (DSM-5 / ICD-11), including differential diagnosis
* Produce clear, evidence-based diagnostic reports within agreed timeframes
* Deliver professional, sensitive feedback sessions including psychoeducation and recommendations
* Maintain accurate clinical records and adhere to governance, safeguarding, and GDPR requirements
Essential Criteria
* Current NMC registration as a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN)
* Demonstrable experience independently completing autism assessments
* Strong understanding of autism presentations across the lifespan, including masking and co-occurring mental health conditions
* Excellent clinical assessment and report-writing skills
* Ability to work autonomously within a structured clinical governance framework
* Commitment to neuro-affirming, evidence-based practice
* Appropriate professional indemnity insurance
Desirable
* ADOS-2 training and experience (relevant module/s)
* Experience with structured autism interviews (e.g. ADI-R, DISCO, 3Di)
* Experience within NHS or NHS-commissioned pathways (including Right to Choose)
* Experience assessing children, adolescents, and families
