Job overview

To develop and deliver clinical skills and vocational training programmes for multi-professional audiences in support of identified training needs to support the delivery of learning within the Emergency Department in conjunction with the Emergency Department Practice Development Nurse (PDN). To actively promote patient safety through the facilitation of training programmes, departmental teaching or coaching to ensure that learning reflects improvements to the patient experience.

To manage the process of assessment of clinical skills, ensuring that competency data is collected, maintained and reported on a quarterly basis to the divisional Matron via the Emergency Department PDN.

Main duties of the job

1. To support the ongoing Trust programmes, including the corporate and local induction programme for both registered and unregistered staff.

2. To provide workshops for nursing staff and students to update their practice or learn new skills.

3. To provide approved training programmes using appropriate handouts and presentations and to continually review and develop training methods using the latest research.

4. To ensure own knowledge base is updated and evidence based.

5. Ensure that procedures for extending the role of the nurse and scope of professional practice are implemented and revised regularly.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Skills Training

1. To develop agreed training programmes for clinical practice in support of the Trust’s Development Strategy ensuring that the programmes are updated; evidence based and that the process for assessed practice is monitored.

2. To provide on-going support and assessment of clinical skills such as those requiring competency sign off in the practice areas ensuring the assessment documentation is completed to the expected standard creating an atmosphere conducive to learning i.e. Preceptorship Handbook, Care certificate, Apprenticeship course.

3. To actively encourage and participate in sharing good practice throughout the Emergency Department with multi-professional staff.

4. To contribute to the training needs analysis of each clinical area in liaison with Emergency Department PDN.

5. Liaison with Emergency Department PDN to develop and facilitate new clinical skills training programmes and to design competency based training programmes where they do not exist to meet those needs.

6. To contribute to the quality control aspects of Education ensuring that the standards required of the Educational governance from the Health Education East of England is maintained.

7. To reinforce training on new clinical equipment in each area.

8. To support the newly qualified nurses at the Trust throughout the preceptorship period and assist in the delivery of the preceptorship competency programme.

Managerial Responsibilities

1. To take part in sharing good practice days for multi-professional staff, raising awareness of development opportunities throughout the Trust.

2. To participate in recruitment and selection of staff for Student Nurses, Return to Practice students as and when appropriate.

3. To be actively involved in promoting good communication between wards/departments.

Education, Training and Development of Staff

Professional and Legal Responsibilities

1. To develop the role of clinical expert in providing care and advice on related problems and to take responsibility for own professional development, undertaking appropriate activities to update clinical knowledge and skills.

2. Promote awareness and compliance amongst colleagues regarding Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.

3. Uphold the principles of the NMC Code of Professional conduct.

4. Comply at all times with regulations issued by the Trust especially those governing health and safety at work and to ensure that any defects which may affect staff or patient safety at work are brought to the attention of the appropriate Manager.

Care and Compassion

The post holder must be able to actively demonstrate and proactively deliver effective and personal care, which is safe for the patients, in a calm and compassionate manner to every patient, every time. This should be at the core of all planning which actively involves the patient and where appropriate, their relatives /carers. The ability to escalate areas of interprofessional and multiagency care concerns to the ward manager, Matron or Deputy/Head Nurse in a timely manner.

4. Evidence of recent professional and academic development to degree level equivalent
5. Recognised assessing qualification (MSPP/ C&G/ AET)
6. In date ILS/ALS or equivalent PILS/EPALS
7. Adult and Paediatric Safeguarding level 3.
8. SSSA/ SLiP compliant

11. Experience of working within an Emergency Department and managing acutely unwell / traumatically injured patients
12. Recent ED experience (within the last 12 months) at Band 6 level
13. Extensive comprehensive and clinical nursing experience with ED environment
14. Knowledge of local, regional and national policies pertaining to contemporary practice
15. Experience of mentoring /supervising / assessing staff and students in practice
