At JSM Group, we specialise in substation and cabling projects at both distribution and transmission levels, playing a key role in supporting the UK’s decarbonisation targets. We are looking for a Principal Primary Power Engineer to lead technical excellence, mentor engineers, and ensure high-quality design solutions across our projects.
SCOPE OF ROLE
As a Principal Primary Power Engineer, you will be responsible for leading a team of engineers and acting as a technical authority in the design and delivery of substation primary plant and cabling projects up to 400kV. You will oversee project design, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation, ensuring all work meets the highest industry standards. This role requires occasional travel to JSM offices and client locations, with the potential for overnight stays.
HOW YOU`LL SUCCEED
Leading and mentoring a team of engineers, fostering growth and development
Acting as the technical authority on primary plant design, including power transformers, AIS/GIS switchgear, cabling, and accessories
Developing concept and detailed designs in line with DNO and National Grid standards
Managing project budgets to ensure cost-effective design delivery
Delivering detailed substation plant designs, including layouts, specifications, and short-circuit calculations
Ensuring compliance with CDM 2015 regulations and acting as a Principal Designer when required
Guiding on constructability issues to enhance project efficiency
Conducting due diligence checks on internal and third-party technical outputs
Standardising design solutions and maintaining a technical library
WHAT IT TAKES
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
Chartered Engineer (CEng) status (or working towards it)
Proven experience in substation primary plant design
Strong leadership and team management skills
A proficient working knowledge of CDM regulations
Experience in power system studies and earthing design (beneficial)
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
