As a steel erector, you will create the ‘skeleton’ frameworks for construction projects of all shapes and sizes.
Responsibilities
* Review technical plans drawn by architects and engineers.
* Plan project assembly.
* Cut and shape steel.
* Operate hand and power tools.
* Install and fix steel girders, pipework and beam sections to make a steel framework.
* Use elevated work platforms and scissor lifts.
* Lay metal decking.
* Fix safety netting and edge rails.
* Lifting and guiding components into position with tower cranes.
* Lining up and levelling steelwork before bolting it in place.
* Work on-site, often at height.
How to Become a Steel Erector
While there are no formal qualifications needed, you can pursue a career through college courses, apprenticeship, or direct application to an employer. Many employers are interested in enthusiastic, willing‑to‑learn individuals who can follow instructions.
College / Training Provider
Achieving GCSE qualifications (or equivalent) in Maths and English is beneficial. You could study for a Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills or a Level 2 Award in Skills for Engineering to improve your abilities and job prospects.

Apprenticeship
An apprenticeship with a construction company is a good way into the industry. Open to anyone over 16, you’ll be employed and expected to work a minimum of 30 hours a week, split between on‑job experience and training.
