Consultant in Cardiology – Specialist Interest in Intervention

A whole‑time/part‑time consultant in Cardiology is available now based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The appointment is on a whole‑time/part‑time basis but applications are welcome from those who wish to job share or work part‑time. Any person who is unable for personal reasons to work full‑time will be eligible to be considered for the post, and the postholder may work in any of the Trust's locations.

The postholder’s duties will be primarily at John Radcliffe Hospital, with coronary lab activity at Milton Keynes University Hospital, but it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations.

All consultant cardiologists participate in a consultant‑of‑the‑week rota for general cardiology, currently approximately 1 in 16 weeks. On these occasions the consultant is released from morning fixed commitments to undertake CCU ward rounds, the email advice line, and the commitment is reviewed periodically and may change following consultation.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical

The Interventional Cardiology Department is one of the highest‑volume PCI centres in the UK, undertaking the full range of coronary interventional procedures. The successful applicant will support the ongoing development of the established invasive coronary service, and the growth of a coronary network to consolidate regional services. They will help to provide a non‑emergency weekend coronary invasive service to support rollout of a pathway for acute admissions. The role will strengthen links by attending local MDTs and providing specialist clinics for complex cases.

Teaching/Research

As a teaching hospital trust, postholders are required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. The contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.

Clinical Governance

The postholder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

Personal and Professional Development

The postholder must keep themselves fully up‑to‑date with their area of practice and demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust through annual appraisal and revalidation. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other personal development needs. The appointee will be mentored by a named senior consultant.

Management

The postholder will work within the Trust’s management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, and will be responsible for administrative duties associated with the care of patients and running their clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.


Person Specification


Qualifications / Training

* Registration on the GMC Specialist Register in Cardiology or CCT in Cardiology within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview
* Fully trained in Coronary Intervention
* Full registration and licence to practise
* Higher medical degree relevant to cardiac imaging (MD/PhD)
* Sub‑speciality interest


Experience

* Elective and acute PCI including PPCI and Structural Cardiology including TAVI
* Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.


Skills and Knowledge

* Excellent leadership skills; evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital.
* Effective administrative and time‑management skills; training in clinical management.
* Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork.
* Good spoken and written English; highly developed communication and interpersonal skills.
* Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training.
* Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities.
* Ability to contribute to long‑term development and success of the service.
* Peer‑reviewed publications and research grants.

* Full registration and licence to practise

Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 a year — per annum pro rata.
