Specialist Occupational Therapist

Are you an experienced Paediatric Occupational Therapist looking for a new challenge? Are you motivated to make a meaningful difference to children and young people aged 0‑19? Would you like to join an expanding, innovative and supportive service within a forward‑thinking Trust?

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for an experienced Paediatric Occupational Therapist to join our friendly and dynamic countywide team on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract to cover maternity leave.

This role offers the opportunity to be part of an excellent example of collaborative working, providing high‑quality occupational therapy interventions that promote the therapeutic use of everyday activities for children and young people.

You will work closely with a well‑established multidisciplinary team including physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, education and community paediatricians, to deliver outstanding, child‑centred care.

You will be well supported by an experienced team of occupational therapists who offer excellent peer support, alongside a strong commitment to personal and professional development.


Main duties of the job

The post holder works as part of the Community Paediatric Occupational Therapy Service.

The post holder works autonomously with emphasis placed on multi‑disciplinary working and multi‑agency collaboration and has specific responsibility for:

* Holding their own clinical caseload.
* Clinical supervision and development of more junior staff.

The post holder will carry out specialist assessments and treatment and provide advice for children on their caseload in mainstream schools, special schools, and other community settings. They will attend multi‑agency meetings and relevant discussions, including EHCP meetings and tribunals if required.

The post holder will contribute to projects as required. This will be undertaken with the co‑production and service redesign team working with various stakeholders such as families, education staff and other health professionals.


Job responsibilities

Provide specialist, evidence‑based assessment, treatment and/or advice to children (aged 0‑19) referred to the paediatric occupational therapy team, in liaison with families and other professionals within a multi‑agency framework.

Participate in education health care plans and the education tribunal process; manage a specialist clinical caseload of children with highly complex needs.

Work collaboratively with multi‑disciplinary teams to provide a coordinated and integrated approach to patient care, including health, social services, education and voluntary sector.

Provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers and other professionals to promote understanding of occupational therapy aims and ensure a consistent approach to the child’s care.

Develop and implement child‑centred SMART goals based on clinical need, facilitate the provision of specialist equipment, and monitor progress using evidence‑based outcome measures.

Facilitate the child’s return to school following discharge from hospitals and contribute to planned hospital admissions in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date case notes, write and comment on all children in the caseload, and produce written reports for education health plans and tribunals.

Support and supervise junior occupational therapy staff, students, and support staff, and take part in supervision and professional development activities.


Person Specification


Qualifications and Training

* BSc OT or Dip COT
* HCPC Registration
* Evidence of continued professional development, including reflective practice and clinical experience with children and young people
* Member of CYP & F


Experience

* Post‑registration experience, including 12 months at Band 5 level in paediatric occupational therapy
* Knowledge of common paediatric conditions such as cerebral palsy and developmental coordination disorder, and related conditions such as epilepsy
* Experience applying the OT process
* Experience in informal and formal presentations to children, families, professionals, and students


Skills

* Good standard of spoken and written English
* Ability to provide written and verbal advice regarding occupational therapy intervention
* Ability to communicate in formal and informal settings using a range of media (e.g., PowerPoint)
* Experience involved in previous service developments
