The Role and Department
The Directorate of Advanced Research Computing (ARC) provides broad computational capabilities to support and define the research and innovation undertaken at the institution.
ARC's mission is to deliver a coherent strategy for research computational support, enabling research and innovation to lead in computational practices, fostering expertise, and enhancing interdisciplinary collaborations. Core to this are platforms like High Performance Computing, data analytics, and research software engineering.
We organize our activities under three main pillars:
* Research Computing Platforms
* Research Software Engineering
* Developing researcher computational skills
This is delivered by the Administration, Research Computing Platforms (RCP), and Research Software Engineering (RSE) teams.
The Research Computing Platforms (RCP) Team provides facilities, training, and support for researchers engaged in computationally demanding research. Join us to:
* Provide HPC & Cloud facilities and support users in running simulations, data analyses, and machine learning workloads
* Enable tackling complex problems beyond the capacity of desktops or laptops
* Support running many tasks simultaneously
Create strong relationships with academics, combining technical knowledge with research needs to develop, improve, and maintain services that:
* Are stable and secure
* Are user-friendly, feature-rich, and adaptable
* Deliver fast and predictable performance
Share specialist knowledge within the research community, facilitate consultation, and ensure effective knowledge transfer across the institution. Represent the university externally on matters of expertise.
Contribute to local, regional, and national services, such as the Hamilton HPC system, Mosaic research cloud, EPSRC tier-2 HPC system "Bede," and research infrastructure in academic departments. Collaborate with CIS, Estates, and external providers as needed.
