Job overview
The successful candidate will join the colorectal clinical oncology team as an advanced practitioner. They will play a key role in coordinating and promoting continuity of care, ensuring patients know whom to contact for information and advice. The role requires deep knowledge of the colorectal cancer care pathway, coordination of radiotherapy aspects, effective management of the waiting list, and reducing waiting times while maintaining a patient‑focused service.
Responsibilities
* Participate in the direct clinical management of patients from initial presentation through discharge or death, including history taking, physical examination, and ordering clinical investigations.
* Formulate and reassess clinical management plans.
* Provide independent prescribing support where appropriate.
* Manage complex and sometimes sensitive patient information, communicate prognosis and life expectancy, and conduct “bad news” consultations.
* Conduct persuasive and motivational communication, negotiation, training and reassurance with patients, families, and the multi‑disciplinary team.
* Lecture to radiographers, postgraduate scientists, doctors in training and support departmental teaching programmes.
* Consent patients for treatment and procedures in accordance with hospital policy.
* Accept, review and act on referrals from other professional colleagues.
* Coordinate and manage the admission and discharge process for the colorectal disease group, referencing relevant policies.
* Educate patients and carers on health promotion, illness prevention, and lifestyle changes.
* Prepare accurate and concise verbal and written records and reports.
* Communicate regularly with referring specialists, GPs, and community/hospice services.
* Collaborate on patient advocacy and colleague support within the wider cancer network.
* Participate in strategic review, representing the service at internal and external strategy meetings, advisory boards and working groups.
* Publish research findings in peer‑reviewed journals with international impact.
* Maintain and develop specialist knowledge in radiotherapeutic, chemotherapeutic, surgical and palliative care for lower GI oncology.
* Maintain professional registration and complete CPD, keeping a portfolio that demonstrates competency.
* Appoint a named mentor and engage in personal development planning.
* Apply analytical and judgement skills within a clinical team led by a consultant oncologist.
* Monitor and evaluate own practice, inform annual review, and contribute to policy development and implementation.
* Plan, organise and adjust complex clinical management plans, allocating tasks to colleagues and partner organisations.
Person specification
Qualifications
* MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice
* Registered with HCPC, NMC or equivalent relevant body
* Accreditation as a non‑medical prescriber
* Teaching & Mentorship Course completion
* Recent evidence of continuing professional development
* Advanced Communication Skills training
Experience
* Significant experience in oncology research and/or development
* Significant clinical oncology experience
* Experience in teaching and facilitating learning for others
* Experience of advanced oncology modalities such as proton therapy and adaptive radiotherapy
Skills
* Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication
* Ability to assess and manage patient risk safely
* Experience working across professional boundaries within a multi‑disciplinary team
