Job Description

In the School of Inflammation, Infection and Immunology; Department of Biomedical Sciences, College of Medicine and Health at the University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK. Full time starting salary £47,389 to £56,535 with potential progression to £63,606. Grade 8. Full Time, Permanent. Closing date 6 March 2026. Interviews in person.


Academic Development Programme

New Assistant Professors will undertake a 5-year development programme, at the end of which they are expected to be promoted to Associate Professor.


Summary Of Role

You will contribute to teaching, scholarship and administration in the new Birmingham Centre for Anatomy, Surgical and Clinical Skills (BCASCS). You are expected to demonstrate academic citizenship, maintain mutually respectful relationships, and impact positively on colleagues. Teaching will include management, development and delivery of modules, programme review, student experience and employability, and technology‑enhanced education in anatomy. The role also involves advising staff and students, advancing teaching practice, supporting student academic and pastoral care, and contributing to knowledge transfer, enterprise, public engagement and outreach.


Main Duties & Responsibilities


Education

* Specifically, you will be involved in the introduction or improvement of technology enhanced education and educational resources.
* Introducing modern, technology enhanced educational tools such as augmented, virtual or mixed reality, and keeping up with fast‑moving trends.
* Developing innovative, integrated learning opportunities for healthcare students in BCASCS, including educational resources that integrate clinical content with fundamental sciences (e.g. anatomy, medical imaging) and 3D scanning and printing of scarce or irreplaceable material.
* Embedding these resources across programmes, including integration into assessment where appropriate.
* Being involved across the range of teaching and learning activities in anatomy (gross anatomy, histology, neuroanatomy, embryology, radiology).
* Contributing to curriculum development and/or renewal.
* Developing and managing best‑practice approaches to teaching and learning.
* Advising others on learning, teaching and assessment.
* Contributing to and publishing scholarly output.
* Delivering specific professional programmes where appropriate.
* Advancing teaching in modules within the School and providing student academic support.
* Informing teaching practice through anatomical or pedagogical research or scholarship.
* Frequently updating subject expertise and undertaking personal professional development, including self‑reflection and using student and peer review feedback.
* Playing an important role in the recruitment and admission of students where relevant.
* Co‑supervising doctoral students to completion.
* Using a variety of methods in teaching and advising individuals and groups of undergraduates, postgraduates or external students:
o Teaching, assessing and examining courses at a range of levels.
o Planning and reviewing teaching approaches and encouraging others.
o Creating and designing learning and assessment materials, including technology‑enhanced resources and high‑quality prosected specimens.
o Designing contemporary, inclusive, engaging and academically challenging curriculum content.
o Working collaboratively with colleagues to design and deliver teaching, learning and assessment.
o Using digital resources effectively to support learning and assessment.
o Making substantial contributions to the design of teaching programmes more widely.
o Undertaking and developing supervision, marking and examining responsibilities where appropriate.
o Developing advice on learning and teaching tasks and methods, including technology‑enhanced methods.
o Making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement/outreach activities that enhance the student experience or employability, and benefit the College and University.
o Devising and supervising projects, student dissertations and practical work.


Management & Administration

* Contributing to the administration/management of teaching across the Department/School.
* Leading and managing a team to devise and implement new and/or revised processes (e.g. recruitment drives).
* Supporting and leading the management of anatomical collections and human material audit activities.
* Assisting the Designated Individual for Anatomical Examination and professional services staff with compliance to Human Tissue Act legislation.
* Advising on personal development of colleagues and students.
* Contributing to administrative activities within the University (e.g. appeals panels, working groups).
* Managing enterprise, business development and public engagement activities.
* Contributing to recruitment (e.g. attendance at Open Days), public engagement, widening participation and schools outreach.
* Promoting equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring, evaluation and actively challenging unacceptable behaviour.


Citizenship

* Pursuing activities that help others engage effectively and efficiently.
* Demonstrating willingness to be involved in various activities supporting University life (e.g., graduation, committees).
* Demonstrating support for colleagues by sharing resources and providing advice.

Person Specification

General Qualifications And Education

* Normally a higher degree relevant to the discipline area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications.
* Medical or dental degree and/or degree in anatomy or a related subject.
* Educational qualification such as a postgraduate certificate/diploma in higher education.
* Substantial experience providing technology‑enhanced education (e.g. virtual, augmented or mixed reality; 3D printing).
* Extensive teaching experience and scholarship, within anatomy.
* Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning.
* Skills in managing, motivating and mentoring others successfully at all levels.
* Membership of Anatomical Society, British Association of Clinical Anatomists, or an equivalent learned society.


Learning And Teaching Requirements

* Excellent knowledge of anatomy, histology, embryology and neuroanatomy.
* Good understanding of HTA regulations and codes of practice.
* Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes.
* Experience of learning and teaching competence using human donor material.
* Evidence of innovative teaching methods.
* Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching and advising colleagues, including technology‑enhanced methods.
* Experience and achievement in knowledge transfer, enterprise or similar activity that enhances the student experience or employability.
* Experience in public engagement, outreach, recruitment, scholarly outputs or similar activities (desired).
* Expertise in clinical imaging (desired).


Management And Administration Requirements

* Ability to contribute to School/Departmental management processes.
* Ability to assess and organise resources effectively.
* Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
* Experience of championing equality, diversity and inclusion in own work area.
* Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied.
* Ability to identify issues with the potential to impact protected groups and take appropriate action.
