Overview

A position exists for a computational applied mathematician to work on developing a fundamental understanding of transition and ensuing turbulent mixing in stratified shear flows from 1 January 2020. The successful candidate will be based at the Department of Applied Mathematics & Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge and will collaborate closely with Professor Colm-cille Caulfield and Professor Rich Kerswell.


Responsibilities

* Run and analyse numerical simulations and develop and conduct individual and collaborative research objectives.
* Plan and manage own research and administration, with guidance if required.
* Communicate material of a technical nature and build internal and external contacts.
* Assist in supervising student projects, developing student research skills, and plan/deliver seminars related to the research area.
* Engage with a range of methodological approaches including generalized stability theory, dynamical systems theory, reduced order modelling such as dynamic mode decomposition, and various aspects of machine learning.
* Demonstrated familiarity with at least one of these areas is essential; familiarity with instability, turbulence and mixing in stratified shear flows is desirable.


Qualifications

* The successful candidate will have or be about to receive a PhD in mathematics, engineering or a closely related area.
* Familiarity with at least one of: generalized stability theory, dynamical systems theory, reduced order modelling (e.g., dynamic mode decomposition), and machine learning.
* Familiarity with instability, turbulence and mixing in stratified shear flows is desirable.


Terms

* Fixed term: The funds for this post are available for up to 3 years.
* Closing date: 6 November 2019.
* Salary: Starting salary dependent on qualifications and experience.
