Ysgol Bryn Derw is a successful and over-subscribed ASD Special School for pupils from across Newport, opened in September 2017. The school has 111 pupils aged between 3 and 19, and over 100 staff. The Governing Body seeks to appoint a School Support Officer Level 3 to work in this busy and rewarding environment.
We are expanding onto a third site in September 2025 to accommodate additional pupils and are expanding our support team. The post-holder will be part of a team of four, playing a key role in the school's smooth operation and supporting classroom staff. Responsibilities may include school finance, attendance, reception, communication, and administrative duties. The post may be based at Melfort Road (Gaer) or Hadrian Close (Caerleon). Experience with electronic systems like CIA, iTrent, SIMS, and Parent Pay is beneficial. The ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines is essential.
You should have excellent literacy and numeracy skills, the ability to handle situations calmly, and develop good relationships with pupils, parents, and staff.
The selection process will include tasks and an interview with the School Business Manager, leadership team, and a Governor.
Applicants must provide evidence of their right to work in the UK, such as a passport or work permit, if invited to interview. The role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) and requires a DBS check.
Closing date: Tuesday 17th June
Shortlisting: Wednesday 18th June
Interview and assessment: Tuesday 24th June (planned)
Start date: Monday 1st September 2025
Applications in Welsh or English are welcomed. Newport City Council encourages applications from minority ethnic communities. Applicants should already have the right to work in the UK, as sponsorship is not supported.
