Job Title: Interim Associate or Senior Editor, Communications Biology

About The Role
We are looking for an Associate Editor with research experience in relevant scientific areas in biology to join Communications Biology – a multidisciplinary open access biology journal. The role is a temporary position that allows you to try an editorial role before fully committing to this career choice.
We are mainly looking for a background in Metabolism, Genetics or Immunology but will consider other biological research backgrounds.
Fixed‑term contract position based in London or Pune with a hybrid working pattern.
Role Responsibilities
- Handle original research papers and work closely with other editors on manuscript selection and peer review.
- Make well‑reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts based on expert advice.
- Engage with an external editorial board – guide and assist external editors with the above tasks, and recruit and train new board members.
- Liaise extensively with editors at other Springer Nature journals and with experts in the international scientific community.
- Attend conferences and visit research institutions.
- Commission various content including Reviews, Perspectives and Comment articles.
- Contribute to defining journal strategy and editorial policies.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications
Essential
- A PhD or equivalent in a relevant biology discipline; a background in Metabolism, Genetics or Immunology preferred.
- A genuine passion for scientific communication and promoting rigor and transparency.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in English (written and spoken).
- The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research from diverse areas of the biological sciences.
- A desire to interact with scientists worldwide and help them understand our publishing criteria.
Desirable
- Postdoctoral experience (advantageous but not essential).
- Editorial experience (full training provided; substantial experience may lead to consideration for Senior Editor).
