Working under the day-to-day supervision of pharmacists and Pharmacy Leadership, the technician is responsible for proper medication handling. This includes receiving, distribution, managing expiration dates, inventory in Pyxis, storage, repackaging, compounding, filling orders, delivering, and stocking. The role requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works under the supervision of:
Ordering/Receiving
* Assists with receiving orders from wholesalers.
* Ensures all items are received and properly inventoried with stickers.
* Confirms each medication is scannable; involves pharmacist when appropriate.
* Maintains stock levels by informing in writing when items are low.
* Repackages medications from bulk to unit-dose when necessary.
* Performs calculations for dosing, conversions, and admixture volumes.
* Prepares clean room and sterile products area for daily use, following policies and procedures.
* Prepares low and medium risk sterile and non-sterile compounds, adhering to universal precautions and aseptic techniques.
Inventory Management
* Checks expiration dates inside and outside the department.
* Credits and debits patients in Meditech for reordered or returned medications.
* Resolves missing medication issues.
* Performs monthly floor inspections for medication integrity.
* Ensures medications are properly labeled and disposed of correctly.
* Identifies and returns expired medications for credit.
* Assists with semi-annual inventory activities.
Fills Medication Orders
* Receives labels and orders; accurately selects the proper drug, dosage, and strength.
* Retrieves medications from ADC fill lists accurately.
* Organizes filled medications neatly for checking.
* Retrieves medications as requested at the window and refills trays and kits.
* Fills OR machines accurately, using scanners when required.
Delivers Medication
* Performs routine rounds to patient care areas promptly.
* Delivers medications to appropriate locations and updates ADC with current dates.
* Outdates medications in ADC during delivery and returns meds from floors as needed.
Fills Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADC)
* Understands loading/unloading processes.
* Fills ADC accurately, troubleshooting minor issues and rebooting equipment as needed.
Communication
* Uses excellent customer service skills to resolve issues.
* Answers phones and triages calls needing a pharmacist.
* Communicates effectively with nursing and staff outside pharmacy.
Professionalism
* Maintains professionalism and good working relationships.
* Dresses professionally and keeps work area organized.
* Represents the pharmacy department and supports training of new staff.
* Complies with HIPAA policies and manages time effectively.
Maintains Logs
* Documents logs accurately daily, including refrigerator and hood cleaning, eye wash.
* Reports errors or omissions.
Handles Controlled Substances
* Maintains accurate records and reports discrepancies immediately.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Knowledge and Skills
* Written and oral communication skills.
* Basic math for compounding.
* Ability to work in a team and problem solve.
* Provide high-level customer service.
Education/Experience/Licensure/Other:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Prior pharmacy technician experience preferred.
Licensure: Maintain CPhT certification and state registration as required.
Complete educational modules (e.g., Steward University) and perform required tests.
Shifts include day and evening, with every other weekend required.
