Are you a motivated and innovative nurse with experience of working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, or within the field of Inherited Cardiovascular Diseases (ICVD)?

We are looking for a knowledgeable nurse who can bring their valuable experience with them to join a dedicated team of clinical nurse specialists. This is a position requiring excellent specialist clinical skills, as well as the leadership and management skills to lead a dedicated team of nurse specialists and support staff.

The Centre for Inherited Cardiovascular Disease at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) manages an increasing case load consisting of confirmed and suspected diagnoses as well as a cardiac screening programme. The majority of our work is centred on our busy outpatient clinics, which run every weekday. We manage outpatient clinics dedicated to Inherited Cardiomyopathies, Inherited Arrhythmias and Inherited Aortopathies.

A significant and increasing proportion of our work is focused on supporting our patients during hospital admissions, which may be undertaken for medical management or surgical intervention.


Main duties of the job

The role of Clinical Nurse Specialist for Inherited Cardiovascular Diseases (ICVD) at Great Ormond Street Hospital is a position requiring excellent specialist clinical skills, as well as the leadership and management experience needed to lead a dedicated team of nurse specialists and support staff.

You will work within a wider team, composed of cardiologists with an interest in paediatric and adult inherited cardiac conditions, specialist nurses, cardiac technicians, clinical psychologists, geneticists and administrative staff. You will be expected to have excellent skills to support the whole family throughout the process of screening, diagnosis and on-going care.

The post-holder will have the ability to develop and improve service delivery by driving and implementing change. They will work in collaboration with the team’s other Clinical Nurse Specialists to ensure that the team delivers an excellent standard of evidence-based care, providing expert support to patients and families affected by inherited cardiac conditions. We will support your clinical development and will provide a tailored educational pathway.

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

* NMC Registered Nurse (Child) or RN Adult with significant band 6, relevant experience in specialty (cardiology)
* Evidence of on-going professional development relating to clinical specialty (cardiology)
* Possession of a relevant honours degree or in the process of obtaining
* Leadership and management skills
* BLS/EPLS


Desirable criteria

* Recognised teaching qualification
* Assessing and mentoring qualification
* Advanced clinical assessment skills


Experience/Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Demonstrable knowledge of Inherited Cardiovascular Disease and Heart Muscle problems
* Teaching, supervision and managerial experience
* Experience of managing a case load and coordinating patient care
* Detailed understanding of research and audit methodologies
* Experience of management and leadership in a team


Desirable criteria

* Previous experience in a cardiology CNS role
* Previous experience of change management and problem solving
* Experience of handling clinical incidents, Safeguarding and complaints
* Understanding of resource management, health and safety, clinical risk and quality issues

* Excellent clinical skills
* Effective managerial, leadership and organisational skills, including Interviewing and Appraisals.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Ability to work across professional team and organisational boundaries
