Vertex is currently seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist with a strong background in Mass Spectrometry (MS) and proteomics to join our Protein MS team, in our Structural Biology and Biophysics Department in Oxford, UK. This team supports projects from early stage through to preclinical and provides a global capability in state-of-the-art protein mass spectrometry. The position requires experience in the design, preparation, execution and analysis of unbiased proteomics and targeted quantitative protein/peptide assays to interrogate disease biology and enable small molecule drug discovery. Excellent communication skills are required as is a strong ability to work in a team. Experience with other MS techniques such as small molecule, Intact Mass, Native, HDX, or PTM characterisation would be desirable.

This team supports projects from early stage through to preclinical and provides a global capability in state-of-the-art protein mass spectrometry. The position requires experience in the design, preparation, execution and analysis of unbiased proteomics and targeted quantitative protein/peptide assays to interrogate disease biology and enable small molecule drug discovery. Excellent communication skills are required as is a strong ability to work in a team. Experience with other MS techniques such as small molecule, Intact Mass, Native, HDX, or PTM characterisation would be desirable.
As a key player within avibrant andexpanding multi-disciplinary drug discovery team you will be exposed to every aspect of drug discovery and development in one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies.
Key responsibilities:
* Design and execute novel quantitative mass spectrometry assays for peptides and proteomics, including analysis of protein PTMs (e.g. glycosylation, ubiquitination).
* Design, develop and optimize methods in chemoproteomics to identify small molecule target engagement.
* Develop and optimize workflows from sample preparation to data acquisition and data analysis, including statistical analysis.
* Work across multiple MS techniques (protein characterisation, small molecule, peptide mapping)
* Support runningof MS instruments andtake responsibility forroutine upkeep.
* Deliver results in a fast-paced and dynamic research environment and be willing to learn new techniques and technologies as required by the role.
* Organise, record, and report results according to data integrity guidelines.
* Interpret and explain results to cross-functional teams.
Essential
Key Requirements
* Relevant Ph.D. or equivalent experience with proven track record of mass spec delivery
* Demonstrated track record of method development and application of common proteomics and MS acquisition and labelling techniques such as PRM, DDA, DIA, LFQ, SILAC, TMT, dimethyl etc
* Experience with data analysis software packages such as MaxQuant, Skyline, DIA-NN, Spectronaut.
* Practical experience working with a variety of MS systems, experience with Thermo Orbitrap instruments is essential.
* Hands-on experience troubleshooting complex instrumentation.
* Experience with sample prep, peptide enrichment and mass spectrometry method development and optimisation.
* Ability to comfortably manipulate, analyse and interpret complex data.
* Self-driven ability to organize resources and data, manage time and priorities.
* Desire to work in a fast, collaborative, and team-oriented environment.
* The ability to communicate clear and concise updates across a variety of audience levels, keep track of experimental records and results.
* Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable
* Familiarity with other protein MS techniques such as Intact Mass, Native, HDX, MS Imaging.
* Experience with glycoproteomics or glycomics methods.
* Experience running and analysing quantitative small molecule mass spec assays.
* Demonstrable leadership for promoting innovation in those techniques and to troubleshoot problems as they arise
* Experience of working within the drug discovery industry
