You will be responsible for developing zero carbon district heating and cooling solutions for large-scale developments, including HIUs, secondary (in-building) network, heat substations, primary (underground pipe work) network, and the energy centre. This includes end-to-end lifetime energy and system performance models. The Project Development Engineer is responsible for the technical solution from early client engagement through business model evaluation and post-contract support, working closely with the Commercial, Delivery, and Operations teams.
* Work closely with the project manager and team to ensure timely project delivery;
* Provide technical solutions enabling zero carbon heat and cooling, considering system lifetime performance and operation;
* Design and execute solutions for grid extensions and connections post-system implementation;
* Ensure engineering solutions align with performance and business objectives;
* Manage stakeholders, clients, technical advisors, and support teams, ensuring deliverables meet scope and specifications;
* Navigate engineering solutions through governance processes;
* Achieve carbon and financial performance targets with engineering solutions;
* Maintain safety, regulatory compliance, technical integrity, and quality, including authority approvals;
* Engage with supply chains to specify quality materials and equipment;
* Identify and implement design improvements to enhance performance and profitability.
Knowledge and Skills
Ideal candidates will be degree qualified in chemical, mechanical, energy, or process engineering, with at least 5 years of relevant experience in Engineering, Procurement, and Construction. Successful candidates should have:
* An engineering degree and minimum 5 years’ relevant experience;
* Design management experience of district heating and cooling systems, including Energy Centres, secondary networks, and HIUs/tertiary networks;
* Good knowledge of risks and best practices in heat networks for high performance;
* Experience leading technical workstreams, managing supply chains, reporting, and client relationships;
* Installation, operational, or maintenance experience with mechanical systems in district heating/cooling networks;
* Understanding of supply chain components like boilers, CHP, heat pumps, pumps, heat interface units, underground pipework;
* Knowledge of low and zero carbon solutions;
* Strong interpersonal, stakeholder management, and commercial skills;
* Excellent organizational skills and adaptability;
* A safety-conscious approach, with knowledge of safe installation, operation, and maintenance;
* Software skills: MS Office required; EnergyPRO, AutoCAD, Hysopt preferred;
* Knowledge of Building Regulations, British Standards, and other relevant standards;
* Understanding of CP1 (2020);
* Experience managing contractors and external designers (preferred);
* Chartered status with a relevant professional institution (preferred).
