Training Programme Director – Dental Foundation Training

Responsible for coordination, running and quality control of the Dental Foundation Training programme across the Midlands footprint. Approximately 15 trainees are allocated to each scheme, subject to change based on a review of regional and national programme numbers.

Contract until 31 March 2027, subject to a satisfactory appraisal outcome. The postholder reports to the Associate Postgraduate Dean (APD) for Foundation Training.

The post involves 3 sessions per week (4 hours each) based in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin.


Main duties

* Management of the defined scheme, directing the local study programme to meet curriculum requirements and ensure e‑portfolio management and feedback for trainees.
* Build key relationships with Regional Postgraduate Dental Deans, Heads of School, Associate Postgraduate Deans, NHSE (WT&E) staff, Educational Supervisors, and other Training Programme Directors across the Midlands.
* Co‑ordination and participation in Interim and Final Review of Competency Progression (IRCP and FRCP) processes with the Dental Dean as necessary.
* Oversee progress of individual trainees through the curriculum; set learning objectives, conduct appropriate assessments, and provide supervision and support.
* Support Educational Supervisors in the programme, advising on trainees with difficulties and liaising with the Trainee Support Tutor, PSU and Lead Employer.
* Input into Educational Supervisor recruitment and development, supporting induction and educational events, including practice visits under the International Dental Graduate process.
* Provide support for dentists in training experiencing competence or performance difficulties, with referral to the Professional Support Unit if required, and advise senior leadership at an early stage.

Secondments

Experience and Knowledge

* Current or recent Educational Supervisor.
* Good working knowledge of NHS structures and processes.
* Demonstrable track record of delivery in service and education.
* Experience working with learners in a Primary Care NHS setting.
* Experience of clinical and educational leadership.
* Awareness of issues dealing with trainees who fail to progress and need additional support.
* Enthusiasm for education with up‑to‑date training in teaching methods.
* Up‑to‑date knowledge of DFT curriculum, portfolio, selection criteria, examinations, FRCP and other assessment methods.
* Primary Care Dental Practitioner with current demonstrable NHS commitment to primary care, which should be maintained throughout the tenure of the TPD role.
* Leader in healthcare education roles.
* Recruitment and selection experience.
* Awareness of funding streams for healthcare education.
* Understanding of current health, social care and education policy.
* Understanding of multi‑professional workforce matters.


Qualifications and Training

* Fully registered with the General Dental Council as a Dentist.
* Equality and diversity training within the last 3 years.
* Training in appraisal and giving feedback.
* Attendance at courses supporting educational development.
* Higher educational qualification such as a postgraduate certificate, diploma or master’s in education.
* Membership/Fellowship of a College, Faculty or professional association relevant to the role.
* Training in recruitment and selection methods.


Salary

£113,917 per year. 3 Sessions at GP00 (progressing to GP01 subject to review).
