Overview
Mott MacDonald is a global engineering, management, and development consultancy. Our Water Consultancy Division is the centre of excellence for water and wastewater challenges, delivering advisory services, feasibility studies, design, and construction support across the full project life cycle. We are looking for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Senior Civil Engineer with experience in dam and reservoir engineering to join our team in the UK (Cambridge or Leeds) and contribute to diverse, technically challenging projects.
Responsibilities
* Develop design solutions and related deliverables drawing on geotechnical skills including foundation, slope, earthwork, and retaining wall design, in collaboration with structural engineers for complex soil-structure interaction.
* Apply geotechnics to dam and reservoir engineering contexts.
* Lead geotechnical risk management through desk studies, site investigations, data management, and ground modelling.
* Supervise junior staff and provide technical and professional guidance to support their development.
* Deliver design packages with internal and external stakeholders, ensure quality control, manage inputs from team members, and travel to project sites when required.
* Advance the team’s capability through technical excellence and digital innovation; may contribute to project commercial management and proposal delivery.
* Communicate the contribution of your work in the context of social outcomes.
For longer-term career development, opportunities include technical leadership, staff resource management, and client engagement. The role can be full-time or part-time, with an agile working policy that typically requires around 50% of time in the stated offices, adaptable to business and individual needs.
Candidate Specification
* A strong academic background with a Masters degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or Engineering Geology.
* Chartered status with a relevant professional body (e.g., ICE).
* Experience in innovative geotechnical engineering solutions to current design standards; water sector experience and dam engineering are advantageous.
* Proficiency with foundation, slope, and retaining wall design software, numerical modelling, and coding capabilities are advantageous.
* Experience in implementation or construction of design solutions on construction sites.
* Effective communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills; ability to collaborate with all levels and mentor junior staff.
* Ability and enthusiasm for supervising others, including check and approval of key deliverables.
* Project management capability with demonstrable technical leadership and collaboration skills.
