The Science Technician will prepare apparatus, set up practical lessons, manage laboratory stock and maintain equipment to support effective teaching across KS3–KS5. This Science Technician post begins January 2026, with a structured induction in the weeks preceding January 2026 to ensure continuity and a confident start. Position details Role: Science Technician — Birmingham Start date: January 2026 Contract: Permanent / Full-Time (school dependent) About the role The Science Technician will be responsible for preparing lesson materials, ensuring safe storage of chemicals, maintaining PPE and equipment, and supporting technicians’ processes for risk assessments. The Science Technician will liaise closely with science teachers to prioritise requirements, support practical demonstrations, and manage departmental budgets for consumables. Based in Birmingham, the Science Technician will help maintain a safe and efficient laboratory environment and will be encouraged to develop professionally. Key responsibilities Prepare resources and equipment for practical’s, including setting up and clearing apparatus. Maintain and log inventories for chemicals, consumables and scientific apparatus; order replacements as required. Ensure compliance with COSHH and health & safety procedures and maintain relevant records. Support staff with demonstrations and, where required, assist with workshop-style practical activities. Carry out routine maintenance, report faults and coordinate contractor repairs for laboratory equipment. Person specification Experience in laboratory support or similar technical environment with practical skills relevant to a Science Technician. Knowledge of laboratory health & safety, safe chemical storage and risk-assessment practices. Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and ability to prioritise tasks across a busy timetable in Birmingham. Effective communicator, able to support teachers and pupils and to work independently as a Science Technician. Able to take up post January 2026 and attend induction and handover before January 2026.
