GSL Education are working with a nurturing and inclusive school in Wakefield to recruit a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant. The school provides targeted support to young people with SEMH challenges who require structure, emotional guidance, and personalised learning experiences to thrive both inside and outside the classroom. Role Overview: As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will provide critical support to students facing emotional, behavioural, or social difficulties. You’ll play an instrumental role in helping them engage with learning, build self-esteem, and develop coping strategies. This role is ideal for someone who is resilient, patient, and passionate about inclusion and pupil welfare. Key Responsibilities: Deliver focused one-to-one and group interventions that support emotional wellbeing and engagement. Assist in the implementation of behaviour support plans and contribute to tailored learning programmes. Create a positive, structured, and predictable environment that supports behavioural self-regulation. Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils based on consistency, empathy, and mutual respect. Collaborate with teachers, SENCOs and external agencies to monitor pupil progress and emotional needs. Provide support during lessons, transitions, and social times to maintain safety and routine. Contribute to safeguarding by recognising signs of distress and following school policies appropriately. Job Requirements: Experience working with children or young people with SEMH, challenging behaviour, or alternative provisions. An understanding of attachment theory, trauma-informed practice, and behaviour de-escalation strategies. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to connect with pupils who may struggle to trust adults. Emotional resilience, self-awareness, and the ability to remain calm and supportive under pressure. Strong communication and teamworking abilities, especially in high-pressure educational environments. A passion for promoting equality, inclusion, and positive outcomes for vulnerable learners.
