We are recruiting Customer Services Assistants at Shenfield and Brentwood Libraries. Vacancies include:
* Shenfield Library - Full Time - 37 hours/week
* Brentwood Library - Part Time - 18.5 hours/week - Fixed term
* Brentwood Library - Part Time - 18.5 hours/week - Fixed term for 6 months
All roles include Saturday work.

The Opportunity
Our Customer Service team is central to our success—serving as the face of our libraries and driving our mission. We seek confident individuals who can assist a diverse customer base with changing needs. We foster an inclusive environment where your experience, age, and perspectives are valued.
Key Responsibilities
* Helping people, especially with IT skills—self-taught or not. Using self-service equipment and showing patience and empathy.
* Delivering engaging story and rhyme sessions for parents and toddlers.
* Ensuring health and safety standards are met, identifying and resolving issues.
* Participating in promotional activities, generating income, and sharing ideas for wider rollouts.
* Assisting customers with the library catalogue and promoting full library services.
* Managing stock circulation—sorting, shelving, tidying, handling reservations, fines, and memberships.
* Using data to improve services, focusing on customer and staff needs.
* Helping out with unlocking/locking up and acting as a trusted keyholder in smaller libraries.
Experience and Qualifications
We welcome diverse experiences and qualifications, focusing on core skills such as:
* Possession of a Driving Licence
* Ability to use IT systems or willingness to learn
* Customer service experience
* Confidence in communicating and signposting to services
* Enthusiasm and ideas
* Teamwork skills

Due to the need to be mobile across operational areas, a driving licence and access to a vehicle are required. Expenses are reimbursed per Essex County Council policy.
