A PhD studentship is available to work on Logistics automation. The student associate will work in the Intelligent Logistics Group within the Distributed Information and Automation Laboratory (DIAL). DIAL is based at the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM).

The PhD will be oriented around one of the focus areas of the Intelligent Logistics Group which includes low cost digital solutions for SME logistics providers, resilient forecasting and planning of logistics operations, management of sustainable logistics operations, next generation warehouse automation and others. The work will involve developments such as novel algorithms to support logistics operations, novel automation approaches or the design and development of new digital support tools for logistics providers. Significant flexibility will be given to the successful candidate to ensure the PhD project is suited to their interests. Part of the first year of the PhD studies will involve undertaking mini studies in one or more of the above areas to consolidate the PhD focus. The PhD will involve interaction with one or more industrial partners and industrial case studies to ensure the work is industrially relevant as well as academically new.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a good 2.1 degree (and preferably a Masters degree) in Engineering or Physical Sciences. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a keen interest in aspects of logistics and its role in the modern world.

This studentship will cover University fees for applicant with 'home' fee status and a maintenance allowance of at least £19,000 per year.

Applications for this PhD studentship should be submitted via the University of Cambridge Applicant Portal www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/egegpdpeg, with Professor Duncan McFarlane identified as the potential supervisor. Applications should be submitted by 31 August 2025 and should indicate an expected start date of 5 January 2026. It would be helpful if applicants could also email Ms Becky Evans (dial-admin@eng.cam.ac.uk) to let her know their interest in this position once their PhD application has been submitted. Interviews for the studentship will be held in September.

The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society.
