Monday - Thursday 8am–4pm, Friday 8am – 3.30pm


Overview

West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) is the second largest fire and rescue service in England, serving an area of 902km square and a population of more than 2.9 million people. Our vision is ‘Making the West Midlands safer, stronger and healthier’.

The Transport Engineering Department (TEW) are based at our fleet workshops in Perry Barr, Birmingham, but provide a mechanical and engineering support service to all our fire stations across the West Midlands. Therefore, travel in a brigade vehicle to other locations will be required. This will initially be with another employee from TEW.

The department’s primary responsibilities are for the design, purchase, maintenance and repair of the service’s fleet of 136 emergency response vehicles and 144 support vehicles, as well as the associated equipment required by a fire and rescue service, such as ladders and plant and rescue equipment, totalling over 2000 assets.

The team of vehicle technicians also provide a 24‑hour emergency call‑out service for our breakdowns and urgent repairs to ensure the continued availability of frontline fire appliances and equipment in responding to emergency incidents.

We are looking to appoint an Auto Electrical Workshop Technician to join our fleet department. The role is responsible for undertaking day‑to‑day servicing, predictive and preventative maintenance and repairs to our fire service vehicles, plant and equipment electrical systems to ensure they remain safe and operational. Maintaining a safe and clean workstation, the successful candidate will possess the competence to diagnose faults in mechanical and electrical systems to determine effective repair methods required.


Responsibilities

* carry out scheduled electrical maintenance, ad hoc repairs, modifications and decommissioning of Brigade LGV, PCV and PCL vehicles and associated equipment, ensuring full compliance with ministry and manufacturer standards
* diagnose faults using specialist diagnostic equipment, wiring diagrams and technical documentation, applying logical fault‑finding techniques and recommending improvements to enhance safety and reliability
* complete all service and repair documentation in line with legislative requirements using Fleet Management systems, while supporting organisational objectives and continuous professional development
* work collaboratively with internal departments and stores to ensure timely, cost‑effective workshop operations, contributing to process improvements and reducing vehicle downtime and environmental impact
* maintain high standards of health, safety, equality and diversity, mentor technicians and apprentices, and undertake additional duties within the scope of the role


Experience and skills

* City & Guilds electrical certificate in motor vehicle technology, NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent), minimum 3 GCSEs (or equivalent)
* UK LGV driving licence
* proven experience in the repair, maintenance and overhaul of LGV/PCV vehicles, including major mechanical and electrical components, in line with DVSA legislation
* competent in the safe use of electrical and mechanical workshop equipment, with strong knowledge of health and safety regulations
* practical, mechanically minded and highly dexterous, with the ability to interpret technical drawings and contribute to design or development ideas
* dependable and flexible team player, able to work independently, communicate effectively, undertake physically demanding tasks, and attend training courses as required


Desirable skills or experience

* experience in the use of fleet management software applications
* experience in emergency services workshop
* driving licence with C1 entitlement
