Job overview

An exciting opportunity is available for applications to the above full time post at Luton and Dunstable's 660 bed acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000.

The main responsibilities of the Locum Consultant will be as follows:

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the care of all patients presenting to the hospital

To share with colleagues, the management of Obstetric and Gynaecological patients across multiple clinical settings.

To undertake duties as defined within agreed job plan

Teaching and training of intermediate grade and junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students

To undertake duties as defined within the agreed job plan

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit

To have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD)

To participate in on-call rota providing specialist and timely advice.

Main duties of the job

This is a post for a Locum Consultant Gynaecologist with a special interest in Urogynaecology, to commence as soon as possible.


This post is likely to evolve in the future with the growing Urogynaecology work and in line with the requirements specified by the British Society of Urogynaecology (BSUG).

The appointee will be based at Luton & Dunstable University Hospital (but may be asked to work at other Bedfordshire hospital sites including Bedford hospital) and run gynaecology and gynaecological 2WW clinics, hysteroscopy clinics, labour wards, Gynaecology MDT, participate in the on-call rota for both obstetrics and gynaecology, and run theatre sessions. We are happy to support the appointee with Colposcopy clinics, if they have Colposcopy interests.

It is expected that the post holder, once appointed, will work in partnership with the existing Urogynaecologist at Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

Essential criteria

4. Have a commitment to CME/CPD
5. Able and willing to work with consultant colleagues in equitable sharing of clinical, non-clinical and on-call duties

Personal Circumstances

Essential criteria

6. Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for purposes of on-call emergencies
7. Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance
8. Satisfactory DBS clearance

Training

Essential criteria

9. Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT or equivalent (CESR) by date of interview

Registration

Essential criteria

10. Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice (GMC licence to practice is mandatory before employment commences
11. Specialist Registration in Obstetrics & Gynaecology or eligibility to enter it within 6 months from the time of the interview

Qualifications

Essential criteria

12. MBBS or equivalent qualification
13. MRCOG or equivalent

Desirable criteria

14. ATSM in Urogynaecology
15. ATSM in Labour ward practice
16. MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria

17. Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
18. Comprehensive knowledge and experience in Urogynaecology and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems.
19. Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering a service without direct supervision
20. Obstetrics & Gynaecological Surgery including minimal access surgery

Clinical Effectiveness

Essential criteria

21. Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance.
22. An interest which improves the Obstetrics and Gynaecology pathway in all aspects
23. Experience of guideline appraisal
24. Participation in relevant local audits
25. Ability to interpret and apply clinical research

Desirable criteria

26. Participation in relevant national audits

Teaching

Essential criteria

27. Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students
28. Understands learner centred teaching
29. Evidence of involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching

Desirable criteria

30. Has attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course
