Motor Vehicle Tutor – Alternative Provision
We are currently recruiting for a Motor Vehicle Tutor to support learners within an Alternative Provision setting. This is a highly rewarding opportunity to work with young people who require a more practical, engaging approach to education.
This role is ideal for someone with hands-on mechanical experience who is confident working with disengaged students and can bring learning to life through practical delivery.
The Role
You will deliver engaging, practical sessions focused on motor vehicle maintenance and basic mechanical skills, supporting learners who benefit from a non-traditional classroom environment.
The role will involve:
Delivering practical, workshop-based sessions (e.g. small engines, basic mechanics, maintenance tasks)
Supporting learners on a 1:1 or small group basis
Building positive relationships with students who may be disengaged from mainstream education
Encouraging attendance, engagement and confidence through hands-on learning
Supporting personal development, employability skills and progression pathways
Working collaboratively with pastoral and support staff
About the Learners
You will be working with young people who may:
Have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
Be at risk of exclusion or currently outside mainstream education
Require additional support to engage with learning
A calm, patient and consistent approach is essential.
What We’re Looking For
We are open to candidates from a range of backgrounds, including:
Motor mechanics / vehicle technicians
Workshop engineers or hands-on trades
Vocational tutors or instructors
Youth workers with practical skillsets
You do not need to be a qualified teacher, but you must have:
Strong practical mechanical knowledge (e.g. engines, maintenance, tools)
Confidence managing behaviour and engaging young people
A proactive and resilient approach
The ability to build rapport quickly and positively
Desirable (but not essential)
Experience working in education, training or youth settings
Level 2/3 qualification in Motor Vehicle or similar
Understanding of SEND / SEMH needs
Teaching, training or assessing qualification (e.g. PTLLS, AET)
