Job overview
Work flexibly within a dental team providing high quality care to a wide spectrum of patients across localities within the Dental Service, based at Birmingham Dental Hospital (BDH) and Community Dental Services (CDS) including Mobile Clinics and/or external sites as required. Dental Nurses will be provided with a base clinic/department when appointed but will be expected to work flexibly across different sites where dental treatment is provided. Provide chair side assistance to clinicians, arrange and support domiciliary visits or visits to external sites, assist in screening, epidemiology, and research programmes, and carry out clerical and administrative duties to ensure efficient operation of the clinic/department.
Applicants must be GDC registered to proceed with application.
Main duties of the job
* Maintain a high standard of patient care and confidentiality within all dental clinics throughout the service.
* Provide comprehensive chair side and administrative support to a clinician across all clinical sites within the Dental Services.
* Prepare and monitor patients for and during their dental treatment, providing pre and post operative instructions as required.
* Carry out general care of the surgery including dental equipment/instruments and arrange any necessary repairs.
* Ensure medical emergency drugs and equipment are available and up to date.
* Provide chair side assistance and postoperative instructions during general anaesthetic and exodontia sessions as required.
* Provide oral health education to patients as required by the clinician.
Qualifications
* A Dental Nurse qualification that enables registration with the General Dental Council (NVQ Level 3, Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing, Dental Nursing National Certificate or entry onto GDC register via grand-parenting pre 2008).
* Registered with the General Dental Council.
Experience
* Relevant experience working as part of a dental team (e.g. General Practice, Hospital, Community Dental Services) with chair side duties.
* Experience of working with children, elderly, medically compromised patients, and patients with learning disabilities.
* Flexibility and ability to travel to external sites.
* Ability to deal with emotional & challenging situations.
Skills and knowledge
* Professional communication skills.
* Understanding of confidentiality principles.
* Up to date knowledge of all areas of dental nursing.
* Ability to work under pressure and on own initiative.
* Organisational skills.
* Knowledge of cross infection procedures.
* Computer skills.
* Knowledge of dental procedures.

DBS Costs
All new employees starting work with the Trust will be charged for the cost of their DBS check if required. The cost will be deducted from salary in three payments over a three‑month period. The standard check cost is £26.40 and enhanced check £54.40. The level of check will be determined by the post. No payment will be made until training and DBS are in place.
