Temporary Maternity Cover
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Practitioner to work with Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES) Youth Justice Service (YJS) on a temporary basis covering maternity leave.
About The Role
The YJS is a multi-agency team working to prevent offending and re-offending by children. The Service includes staff from a range of backgrounds including Police, Health, Social Care, Education and Probation. The functions of the YJS include supervising children on a voluntary and conditional basis, subject to Court Orders and Out of Court Disposals, both in the community and occasionally in custody and involves interventions with parents and families. The YJS works to give victims a voice, enables children to re-pay the harm they have caused to the community and strengthens parenting skills.
Our team values at BaNES YJS are that we work to Empower, Understand, Collaborate and Build Relationships. We recognise and value diversity, challenge social inequality and listen to children to take their views into account. We understand the wider causes of offending behaviour, support children and families to make positive changes and create trusting relationships. Trauma informed practice and Systemic ideas are at the heart of how we work with children and young people; understanding how adverse childhood experiences have impacted on behaviour and development and ensuring our interventions are tailored to meet children’s developmental needs. We work in a restorative way and strive to achieve the best possible outcomes with our service users.
The YJS prioritises reducing the number of children in custody, believing that children are best supported to make changes in their lives whilst in the community, in all but the most extenuating circumstances. The Service also prioritises working with the whole family to ensure that the child’s risk and safety and wellbeing are managed effectively.
The YJS in B&NES is striving to become an excellent service for children, parents and carers, and victims and is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic professional to join our team on a temporary basis to cover maternity. We are looking for an individual who is a strong team player and someone who can cover our senior practitioner post and take a lead on projects such as developing the participation work within our service. Post qualifying experience in the justice system, experience of providing reflective supervision to staff, analytical risk assessment and risk management skills, an ability to positively engage with service users and adopt a trauma informed, person-centred approach are all essential.
The Senior Practitioner role will include a mixture of direct work with children, young people and parents and staff supervisory responsibilities.
About You
To apply for the role, you will need a recognised professional qualification from one of the Service’s statutory partners (for example, registered Social Worker, qualified Probation Officer, warranted Police Officer, registered nurse or therapist, qualified teacher).
If you are looking for a varied and challenging new role, to take part in in-depth work with children and their families to achieve positive change, then this opportunity could be for you! We can offer membership of a supportive, restorative, multi-disciplinary team, the opportunity to extend your skills and take on specialist pieces of work, through regular supervision, performance review and training.
BaNES YJS is committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce for staff and volunteers. We actively encourage applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic candidates as they are under-represented within our service.
If you are interested in this post and require more details or just to chat through the role and what’s involved, please contact Carla Cooper, Head of Young People’s Prevention Service by emailing or Kat Brooklyn, Operational Manager by emailing or please call 01225 396966.
Interview date: Thursday 17th July 2025.
