Working as part of the Waste Regulation Team in North West Wales, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that hazardous waste is correctly assessed, classified, and managed in line with the Hazardous Waste (Wales) Regulations 2005 and associated technical guidance. Your work will directly protect the environment, public health, and the integrity of the waste management chain.
As a Hazardous Waste Officer, you will:
* Act as the local area lead for hazardous waste assessment, providing specialist advice on the Hazardous Waste (Wales) Regulations 2005, Waste Technical Guidance Manual 3, and related classification guidance.
* Work directly with a wide variety of waste producers, from large industrial operators to sites handling previously unknown or illegal hazardous waste to ensure they understand and meet their legal responsibilities.
* Review and audit consignment notes to ensure full compliance with the Hazardous Waste (Wales) Regulations 2005, using a strong eye for detail to spot errors, inconsistencies, or indicators of poor practice.
* Analyse and interpret various datasets, laboratory reports, and classification evidence to ensure appropriate classification of waste.
* Work closely with colleagues across regulation, permitting, and enforcement to ensure joined‑up, proportionate, and effective delivery of hazardous waste regulation.
* Support proactive and reactive regulatory work at sites handling hazardous waste, including inspections, compliance assessments, and follow-up actions where waste has been misclassified or managed improperly.
* Provide technical guidance and support to the wider regulation team on hazardous waste issues, contributing to upskilling and consistent application of standards across the area.
* Support the development and use of operational tools, guidance, and procedures that are effective in improving hazardous waste compliance and preventing misclassification.
* Gather and share information on hazardous waste trends, risks, and emerging issues to inform both local decision‑making and national programme priorities.
This role offers a unique opportunity to apply specialist technical knowledge to protect the environment and public health.
