At Zero Point Motion, we’re challenging the limits of what’s possible in inertial sensing. Our mission is to combine cutting-edge cavity optomechanics with MEMS and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) to deliver aerospace-grade precision to commercial markets. This is not business as usual. We’re rethinking sensor systems from the ground up—embracing cross-domain innovation, tackling the impossible, and delivering technology that transforms how the world navigates and interacts with data.

Overview

We are seeking a Senior MEMS Inertial Sensor Engineer to support the development of MEMS/PIC solutions. Your background in scaling commercial MEMS inertial sensors from concept to prototype or product will influence key design decisions and your experience working with MEMS foundries will be vital for realizing these designs. You will work directly with the CEO/inventor to build a team to design, develop and bring to market new inertial sensors for high-volume commercial applications. A collaborative culture of knowledge exchange means prior photonics experience is not required, just an enthusiasm to learn.

You will be part of a core team with electronic engineers, physicists, chip designers and hardware engineers in a fast-paced environment that requires self-motivation and openness to new ideas. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced MEMS engineer to join a small start-up with big ambitions and to contribute personal initiative.

Responsibilities

* Take responsibility for the design of custom electrostatic closed-loop MEMS inertial sensing structures and liaise with external partners such as foundries and test development houses
* Design test structures and define design rules
* Overcome technical bottlenecks
* Complete layout verification
* Collaborate with the PIC team to contribute to the overall design, layout and testing of PIC/MEMS devices
* Initially lead the design of our sensors and support recruitment and supervision of a growing MEMS design team
* Set test parameters and support creation of robust test setups
* Create or shape measurement concepts to acquire electric/digital sensor data
* Analyse and visualize measurement data (e.g., using big-data or machine learning methods)
* Suggest and discuss system improvements (design, functionality)
* Suggest innovative data acquisition or processing methods (measurement systems, evaluation scripts, big-data or machine learning methods)

Experience

* Demonstrable experience in developing accelerometers and/or vibratory gyroscopes, preferably with hands-on testing
* Competent in finite element modelling tools (e.g., COMSOL, Ansys, Coventor)
* Understanding of stress effects and mechanical deformation
* Process sweeps on designs
* Baseline capability for analytical calculations
* Experience with the effects of package stress on design
* Willingness to learn beyond MEMS by applying skills to photonics
* Ability to communicate with technical leadership regarding development issues
* Openness, curiosity, and teamwork
* Ability to explain and visualize data with strong communication skills
* Ability to distill and communicate scientific information effectively with the wider team

Must-have qualifications & skills

* Masters or PhD in Physics or Engineering
* Strong analytical background
* MEMS design and production scale-up experience (5+ years preferred) in accelerometers and/or vibratory gyroscopes
* Experience with layout using Klayout and data analysis using Python, Matlab, JMP or R
* Thorough understanding of electrostatic actuators and capacitive sensing
* Strong theoretical understanding of multi-DOF mechanical modelling and simulation
* Experience working in small engineering teams and leading teams with integrity; startup experience is a plus

Package

* Mid to Senior salary banding: £50,000-£80,000
* Generous package including share options, health insurance, Royal London pension, and sick pay
* Flexible working arrangements with potential for remote working
