Job Purpose
To ensure airport development and operation comply with environmental legal requirements, best practice principles, and Client corporate policy. The role supports asset management by providing expert advice on asset development, capital delivery, and airport operations. The Environment Manager acts as the custodian of the Environmental Management System (EMS), holding internal departments, third parties, and contractors accountable for their environmental impact and performance.
This is a group role, responsible for sharing best practices across the group, developing and maintaining group standards, with some travel between sites as required.
Principal Accountabilities
1. Develop and own Environmental Standards: Support their integration into airport and group LOPs, ensuring compliance with environmental and biodiversity legal requirements, pollution prevention, and fostering a positive environmental culture.
2. Legislation Guidance: Advise the business on upcoming risks and legislative changes affecting operations and commercial performance. Facilitate third-line SME assurance against current legislation.
3. EMS Management: Serve as SME for the airport and EMS, manage re-accreditation to ISO14001, ensure EMS updates, address non-conformities, and fully integrate EMS into operations.
4. Audit and Assurance: Develop and deliver environmental audit programs, manage external assurance audits by clients, certification bodies, and others.
5. Stakeholder Engagement: Lead relationships with regulators and stakeholders such as EA, Water Authorities, Natural England, and local wildlife trusts.
6. Biodiversity Collaboration: Work with the biodiversity team to develop habitat management plans and promote biodiversity best practices.
7. Risk Management: Establish processes to identify, assess, mitigate, and control key environmental risks at both airport and group levels.
8. Business Integration: Assist in preparing business cases, ensuring environmental best practices are included from the outset of proposals and developments.
9. Environmental Engagement: Support internal and external stakeholder engagement and communication strategies.
10. Training and Awareness: Develop and deliver environmental training and awareness programs for staff and stakeholders.
11. Waste Management Oversight: Oversee waste and recycling operations, ensure compliance, drive innovation, and conduct audits.

* Identify, assess, and mitigate environmental aspects, impacts, and risks.

* Manage relationships with regulators and stakeholders.
* Provide informed advice on environmental issues related to asset development.
* Develop and enforce environmental performance improvements across partners and contractors.
* Manage budgets related to licensing, audits, and consultancy support.
Knowledge, Experience, and Skills
* Degree in Environmental Science or related field; 10+ years' experience across multiple industries, including aviation, managing environmental legislation and pollution prevention.
* Full member of IEMA or equivalent.
* Structured approach to EMS development and management.
* Auditor qualification or equivalent; lead auditor experience preferred.
* Excellent communication, report writing, presentation, and influencing skills.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
* Experience engaging with senior management.
* Experience managing teams, including staff and contractors.
* NEBOSH National General Certificate.
