Principal Clinical Scientist

The closing date is 12 January 2026

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Principal Clinical Scientist to join our UKAS‑accredited Clinical Biochemistry Department within Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. This is a 9‑month fixed‑term maternity cover appointment for 37.5 hours per week, offering the chance to work in a progressive and supportive environment.

You will join a highly skilled team of Consultant Biochemists, Principal Biochemists and one STP Trainee. The Clinical Biochemistry service operates across two sites – Prince Charles Hospital and the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. You may be required to work at either of these locations to support service delivery. The department maintains close links with the University of South Wales and is recognised as an excellent teaching laboratory, providing opportunities for professional development and academic collaboration.

This role offers the opportunity to work within a collaborative team environment, develop your expertise, and make a meaningful impact on patient care.

Main duties of the job

As Principal Clinical Scientist, you will undertake duties commensurate with a HCPC‑registered Clinical Scientist in Clinical Biochemistry. This includes interpretation of results, clinical validation, and liaison with clinical teams. You will also participate in the out‑of‑hours clinical service on a rota basis. Acting as an autonomous clinical practitioner, you will provide highly specialised clinical advice in the field of Clinical Biochemistry, contributing to the delivery of a safe, effective, and patient‑focused service.

You will participate in duty biochemist and specialist reporting rotas, authorise reports following autonomous review and interpretation of complex results, add interpretative advice that can influence patient management and treatment. The role involves proactive communication of critical results, responding to clinical enquiries, advising on test selection, and adding further tests where appropriate to support diagnostic and monitoring pathways. You will also identify and resolve analytical issues and provide guidance on sample analysis and patient preparation.
