Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit an enthusiastic, dynamic, experienced nurse to work a hybrid role in our Intravitreal Injection Suite and Eye Day Care unit within Ophthalmology at St Thomas’ Hospital. The successful candidate will be trained in intravitreal injection administration, cannulation and phlebotomy to work within the Injection Suite as part of the Medical Retina service, as well as trained to manage admission and discharge of patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery in our day case unit. This is a hybrid Band 5/6 position, once trained and had competencies signed off to work independently in the injection suite you will rise to a Band 6 for 50% and work as a Band 5 in the day care unit for the other 50% of the WTE position.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be administering intravitreal injections to patients seen within Medical Retina, as well as some other specialist service referrals. Assist with cannulation and drug administration for Fluorescein angiograms and other treatment modalities. Work closely with the team to maintain strict standards of infection control, patient safety, stock control and accurate documentation using EPIC computer system. Within the Eye Day Care unit the candidate will admit and discharge patients who are having ophthalmic surgery under either local or general anaesthetic. The candidate will need to work closely with both teams in order to support the services and ensure patients are provided with safe and compassionate care.

Ophthalmology has over 200 colleagues who all work closely with one another to ensure the smooth day to day running of the service and engage in transformation projects to improve patient and staff experience. Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. BSC/1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification/training and experience
2. Evidence of professional/clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical, managerial training and CPD

Desirable criteria

3. Leadership qualification ( LEO)
4. Sign off Mentorship

Professional Registration

Essential criteria

5. RN1/ RN2/ RN12 or RN Child Registered Nurse on the NMC register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality.

Experience

Essential criteria

6. Previous post registration experience within the relevant specialty
7. Experienced and competent in the management of patients within the speciality
8. Experience of teaching/ assessing/ supervising others in a clinical setting.
9. Supervision of junior staff
10. Experiencing of co-ordinating a shift

Skills

Essential criteria

11. Ability to administer prescribed medication including transfusion of blood and blood products
12. Good communication skills and ability to deal with sensitive information. To include dealing with distressed relatives, care of terminally ill & other challenging situations
13. In depth drugs knowledge
