Overview
Waracle is looking for a Head of Backend & Cloud to lead our practice, drive our technical strategy, and build our Google Cloud Platform (GCP) solutions architecture capabilities. This hybrid role works from our Glasgow office two days a week.
Responsibilities
* Lead the backend and cloud practice: create a compelling vision, mentor teams, and define hiring strategy.
* Develop and execute a Community of Practice (CoP) strategy to foster knowledge sharing and technical excellence.
* Drive our GCP architecture capability: support partnership development, presales, and upskilling across the practice.
* Act as a client advisor at the CTO level, guiding technical strategy and contributing to compelling proposals.
* Design end‑to‑end cloud solutions on GCP, including landing zones for greenfield clients.
* Lead proof‑of‑concepts and solve complex technical challenges.
* Continuously improve coding standards, design principles, and architectural patterns.
* Communicate ROI and business value of technical features to stakeholders.
Qualifications
* Strong backend development experience with Node.js; proficiency in Java, Python, .NET, Go or Rust.
* Proven success shipping solutions on major hyperscalers, especially GCP.
* Experience designing robust architectures and build pipelines.
* GCP Professional Cloud Architect certification highly desirable.
* Expertise in the GCP Well‑Architected Framework and cloud networking and cost optimisation.
* Leadership experience: mentoring teams, fostering continuous learning, and building culture.
* Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to present complex solutions at executive levels.
* Commercial acumen with experience in resource planning, budget management, and account growth.
* Trusted advisor to clients and internal stakeholders.
