Are you an experienced operational leader looking for the opportunity to manage a range of surgical specialties at a senior level? The Surgery and Associated Services (SAS) Care Group at Nottingham University Hospital is looking for an individual with a passion for improvement to join our senior management team as Directorate General Manager for Theatres, Anaesthesia and Perioperative Care.
The Director General Manager works as part of a triumvirate to lead the delivery of five services within the SAS, with operational and strategic responsibility for these services. The role provides visible and authentic leadership for the c.1,000 people working within the Directorate, oversees operational delivery in line with relevant standards and manages the Directorate's c.£100 million budget.
Main duties of the job
* Provide visible leadership so that all staff in the directorate are engaged and motivated to provide safe and effective patient care.
* Foster a culture that promotes openness, where people feel confident to speak up, ensuring that communication mechanisms are operating effectively within the Care Group.
* Encourage a climate of innovation and improvement for all services in the directorate, supporting staff to identify further opportunities for improvement.
* Support the Care Group Director of Operations in the delivery of the Care Group’s strategic plans, ensuring they are consistent with the aims and objectives of the Trust and fully reflect the service needs of the Directorate and Care Group, including sound financial management and budget setting across the Care Group.
* Line‑manage the Specialty/Service General Managers and Programme Managers (where appropriate).
* Deputise for the Director of Operations.

Nottingham University Hospitals is one of the biggest and busiest Trusts in the country, running the largest Major Trauma Service in the Midlands. The SAS Care Group works across all three sites within the Trust – Queens Medical Centre, City Hospital, and Ropewalk House.
This is an exciting time to join the Care Group. We have secured significant capital and revenue investments to enable the relocation of some aspects of our elective surgical service from QMC to City Hospital, taking a first step toward the future vision of City Hospital as an elective campus and providing needed additional capacity to support our elective recovery plans.
Job responsibilities
The post holder will lead and deliver success across a number of key programmes within the Directorate. These programmes will be essential in ensuring that the Care Group can deliver its primary objectives and targets over the coming years and will encompass a range of topics including productivity and efficiency, transformation, clinical effectiveness, quality and workforce succession planning. Person Specification
Training and Qualifications
* Educated to first degree level.
* Further training to masters level or equivalent experience.
* Previous successful management experience at a senior level within the NHS.
Experience
* Highly developed leadership and organisational skills.
* Highly developed specialist knowledge of NHS policy, health sector practices and functions of NHS provider organisations, and current targets in place.
* High level of understanding of NHS contracting and funding flows.
* Proven track record of senior operational management in a multi‑disciplinary environment.
* Extensive experience influencing decision‑making within a large and complex organisation.
Communication and Relationship
* Demonstrates ability to communicate highly complex, sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
* Ability to communicate with both internal staff and external agencies to ensure compliance with performance targets.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
* Ability to inspire confidence and respect in others.
Analytical and Judgement
* Demonstrates ability to analyse complex facts or situations in relation to performance targets, strategy and finance.
* Proven track record of managing operating budgets and delivering financial balance.
* Experience of implementing and evaluating a range of projects/initiatives that represent solutions to changing workforce/service environments.
Planning and Organisation
* Proven track record of developing successful business plans and strategy for planning activity.
* Experience of managing complex organisational change, including working with clinical and non‑clinical staff to change team structures and ways of working.
* Confident in presenting complex information to a wide and varied audience both internal and external to the organisation.
* Experience of formulating long‑term strategic plans and impacting the organisation – translating business strategy into operational delivery.
