About the Role:

As a Catastrophe Research Analyst, the main responsibility will be reviewing the catastrophe models licensed by Liberty to form the Liberty View of Risk. This will include a variety of peril regions globally, and staying up to date with the latest scientific research will be a key part of the role. Other tasks may include reviewing non-modelled perils, back testing historical event claims, and developing tools and processes in collaboration with the wider team.

About the Department & Team:

The Catastrophe R&D Team comprises of a team of analysts with expertise in natural hazards, engineering, catastrophe risk and insurance risk modelling. This team is charged with creating the Liberty view of catastrophe risk and is a part of the Corporate Exposure Management team.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Evaluation of catastrophe models (e.g. Verisk) – this includes design of model tests, review of vendor/broker model evaluation documents, testing and challenging model components and results, and making clear recommendations for model adjustments where required.
2. Support in developing the View of Risk, collaborating with the catastrophe modelling, actuarial, claims and UW teams to review, challenge, identify key issues and provide solutions and recommendations.
3. Creation of custom tools for non-modelled and poorly modelled risks as well as development of tools and novel techniques for evaluation of models and model results. This includes use of GIS as well as other analytical products.
4. Identification of potential large loss scenarios to which Liberty may be exposed and involvement with assessment of emerging risks.
5. These requirements include the Senior Managers and Certification Regime Conduct Rules ,Solvency II, fair treatment of customers, Financial Crime, Data Protection, Conflicts of Interest, and Whistleblowing

Skills and Experience:

6. Graduate degree in geosciences, atmospheric science, mathematics, engineering or other applicable scientific fields.
7. Catastrophe modelling experience.
8. Strong knowledge of at least one catastrophe model suite (e.g. RMS, Verisk) or experience in cat model development.
9. Good knowledge of insurance concepts and the exposure management process.
10. Strong data mining skills, with experience in working with large data sets.
11. Programming and data analysis experience in any one language – e.g. R, Python and SQL
12. Strong statistical and quantitative modelling skills with excellent written/verbal communication skills.
13. Experience in GIS software or geospatial data analyses.
14. Able to work in a team and autonomously, and general willingness to learn and develop skills further.
