Centre for Climate Repair Studentship: Protecting Glaciers - Melting and flow through snowpack
Join to apply for the Centre for Climate Repair Studentship: Protecting Glaciers - Melting and flow through snowpack role at University of Cambridge.
Applications are invited for a PhD project based at the Department of Applied Mathematical and Theoretical Physics. The student will be supervised by Professor Jerome Neufeld and co-supervised by Dr. Katarzyna Warburton. The programme is expected to commence in October 2025. Although not yet funded, it is anticipated to be funded by the Centre for Climate Repair (www.climaterepair.cam.ac.uk) for four years starting from the programme's beginning.
Project Description
This project explores the melting of glacial firn at large scales (>100 km inland from Greenland's margin). It investigates how meltwater percolates and influences glacier dynamics, combining laboratory experiments with numerical simulations of the Greenland ice sheet. The research aims to understand how surface texturing or obstacles could limit meltwater drainage and reduce ice flow towards the ocean.
Qualifications Required
Applicants should hold a strong 2.1 degree in a quantitative subject such as natural sciences, engineering, or mathematics. Experience with fluid dynamics is advantageous.
Application Process
Apply via the University Applicant Portal: https://www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/maampdmtp/apply, referencing Professor Jerome Neufeld as supervisor. The studentship is tied to Girton College. Deadline: 16th May 2025. Early applications are encouraged.
