Purpose of the Job
The main purpose of the job is to improve teaching, learning and assessment in order to maximise student recruitment, retention, achievement and progression in ESOL. In order to realise this purpose, Heads of School lead members of staff organised in curriculum teams. Curriculum teams design, deliver and develop a portfolio of courses within a subject and/or vocational area. Curriculum teams also support students through disciplined academic and pastoral support processes. Heads of School are also responsible for agreeing targets for income associated with short courses or full cost provision.
Reporting to the Assistant Principal for Supported and Targeted Learning, you will lead a team of curriculum and support staff, and will be responsible for the full range of provision on full and part time courses, including managing the quality of the provision. You will lead on development planning in the area, including supporting the team with preparations for qualification changes.
We are seeking an individual with management experience gained within Further Education who can demonstrate the following:
1. Degree or equivalent and a minimum of Level 5 teaching qualification recognised by the FE sector
2. A skilled practitioner in teaching and learning with ESOL specialism, and experience of implementing strategies to improve attendance and retention
3. Specialist knowledge and experience in ESOL, including knowledge of curriculum developments and recent initiatives
4. Understanding and practical application of inclusive learning strategies and a proven commitment to equality and diversity
5. Successful experience of managing a team, including coaching and developing staff
6. Experience of managing change and implementing new initiatives including curriculum developments
Duties
Marketing and Recruitment of Students
7. To develop a marketing plan for the School.
8. To understand market needs associated with their respective industry and employment sector.
9. To liaise and strengthen links with industry/employers and the community to ensure student access to learning and recruitment.
10. To manage the recruitment and guidance of students onto the correct courses, including the use of initial and diagnostic assessment and agreements for learning support.
11. To provide staffing for open evenings, recruitment events and summer guidance and enrolment.
Qualifications:
12. Degree or equivalent level qualification
13. Relevant professional qualification
14. Maths and English at GCSE Grade C/4 or equivalent or willing to achieve
15. A full (minimum Level 5) teaching qualification recognised by the FE sector (e.g. PGCE, DET)**
Knowledge and Experience:
16. At least 3 years relevant teaching experience in ESOL in Further Education
17. Specialist knowledge and experience of ESOL, including up to date knowledge of curriculum developments
18. A skilled practitioner in teaching and learning, and experience of implementing strategies to improve attendance and retention
19. Knowledge of quality improvement processes
20. Understanding and practical application of inclusive learning strategies and a proven commitment to equality and diversity
21. Successful experience of managing a team, including coaching and developing staff
22. Successful experience of curriculum management
23. Understanding of the education market, including regional and community influences
24. Experience of managing change and implementing new initiatives including curriculum developments
