Overview

ScotSTAR - Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (North) / Advanced Retrieval Practitioner (Training Post or Qualified). Applications are invited for the role of Advanced Retrieval Practitioner (Training post or qualified) at the ScotSTAR Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (EMRS) North team, operated by the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS).

The EMRS provides a critical care patient transfer service for remote and rural Scotland and pre-hospital critical care for seriously injured patients at incident scenes. EMRS also supports the SAS in the provision of the medical response to major incidents. The service undertakes primary and secondary retrievals on rotary and fixed wing aircraft operated by the SAS, Scottish Charity Air Ambulance, Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter and by fast response vehicle. The post is based at the ScotSTAR retrieval base at Aberdeen Airport and is 37 hours per week plus on-call (Moving to 36 hours next year).

Advanced Retrieval Practitioners (ARP) work as part of a consultant-led team and form an integral part of the clinical team delivering advanced resuscitation, stabilisation and transfer of critically ill patients. In addition to this ARPs work to support the Ambulance Control Centre (ACC) Critical Care Desk. This desk has a crucial role which includes identifying incidents of major trauma and other incidents which would benefit from an enhanced clinical response. Each ARP also has non-clinical responsibilities to support and improve service delivery.


Responsibilities

* Deliver advanced resuscitation, stabilisation and transfer of critically ill patients as part of a consultant-led team.
* Support the Ambulance Control Centre (ACC) Critical Care Desk to identify incidents that benefit from enhanced clinical response.
* Contribute to non-clinical responsibilities to support and improve service delivery.


Essential criteria / Qualifications

* Extensive experience post adult nurse/paramedic registration with experience in emergency/intensive care services.
* Experience in teaching and in improving the delivery of clinical care.
* Ability to travel to Aberdeen Airport base ideally within 30 minutes.
* Hold a C1 driving license and be able to complete HUET (helicopter underwater escape training) and blue light driver training.


Training Posts

Full training pathway consists of a minimum of 6 months gaining experience and exposure prior to commencing the academic component of the training post. The academic component will take the form of a Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Practice.

AFC Training Salary- Annex 21 Paragraph 2 (iii) of AfC terms will apply. For example, Trainee Advanced Retrieval Practitioners, this is 70% of the top of Band 7 for the first 12 months, increasing to 75% for the remainder of the training period. Post reverts ‘standard’ Band 7 on completion of training.
