The Environmental and Waste Advisor is responsible for monitoring and reporting on compliance with our Corporate and Divisional ISO 14001 management systems, waste obligations, contract requirements, and legislative obligations. This includes auditing and updating the environmental and waste management systems.
The role will support the Group SHEQ Compliance and Integration Manager by:
* Fulfilling the role as the Technically Competent Manager (TCM) for Waste within Power Private, including deputies in their absence.
* Supporting integrations and special projects within the business.
* Participating in external sector scheme and ISO audits.
The role will also provide guidance and support across the SHEQ Team and Operations Team as needed.
Principal Accountabilities
* Monitor, review, and audit compliance with ISO 14001 systems, contract requirements, and legislative obligations.
* Review and update environmental and waste management systems.
* As the holder of a WAMITAB Level 4 Medium Risk Operators Certificate, ensure compliance with waste legislation as the TCM for Waste.
* Develop and maintain internal audit plans in collaboration with the Group SHEQ Compliance and Integration Manager.
* Provide guidance to Divisional SHEQ Heads and the Head of ESG.
* Lead interactions with external ISO certification bodies.
* Assist in developing energy and carbon capture reports and action plans with the Head of ESG.
* Support investigations of environmental incidents, providing feedback and recommendations.
* Assist the Bid team with tenders and support operational teams in implementing management systems and risk controls.
* Develop internal communications and training modules.
* Liaise with regulatory authorities regarding licensing, permits, and incidents.
* Monitor and audit environmental management systems, highlighting weaknesses and areas for improvement.
* Provide audit reports to the Group SHEQ Director.
* Assist in producing environmental reports and case studies.
* Utilize carbon accounting tools to monitor emissions.
* Support energy audits and other environmental initiatives.
Deputising for the Group SHEQ Compliance and Integration Manager
When deputising, the Environmental & Waste Advisor must:
* Monitor regulatory updates and attend training sessions.
* Manage permit conditions and renewals.
* Oversee storage, conduct checks, and ensure proper handling procedures.
* Inspect storage areas and coordinate maintenance.
* Develop spill response plans and conduct drills.
* Maintain waste activity logs and report to authorities.
* Monitor for leaks, spills, and environmental impacts, implementing corrective actions.
* Communicate with regulatory authorities and attend meetings.
* Research and implement best practices and new technologies in waste management.
About You
Qualifications & Memberships:
* IOSH Managing Safely and/or NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent (preferred).
* Full UK driving license.
* IEMA membership (preferred).
* WAMITAB Level 4 Medium Risk Operators Certificate or working towards it.
* ISO 14001 auditor/lead auditor qualification.
* ILM Level 5 Operations/Department Manager qualification.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Skills & Personal Qualities:
* Proven experience in Environmental and Waste Management.
* Knowledge of the Utilities/Maintenance sector.
* Understanding of ISO 14001 standards.
* Experience supporting investigations of environmental incidents.
* Ability to support and develop management systems.
* Strong communication skills, capable of presenting to senior leadership.
* Ability to identify risks and develop mitigation strategies.
* Experience supporting major projects and building stakeholder relationships.
* Understanding of SHEQ policies and their impact on business operations.
