Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee you a work experience placement. Our busiest period for work experience placements is between February and July. During this period, we’ll do our best to accommodate you. If you’re considering applying for a placement between February and July, please apply as soon as you can.
What do we do?
The job of a local council is a diverse one. We are divided in 10 service areas, each with different roles and responsibilities. Our services work together to deliver for the people in our borough.
1. Finance and Revenues Collecting Council Tax Providing Benefits Accounting Setting the Councils’ budget Assessing Risk
2. Legal and Democratic Working with Councilors Managing elections Licensing (e.g. taxis) Providing legal support to other services
3. Environmental Services Collecting bins Managing trees, hedges and grass across the borough Promoting recycling
4. Planning and Building Supporting people through planning applications Building Conservation Planning enforcement Building Control Tree preservation
5. Housing and Environmental Health Preventing Homelessness & supporting those who are homeless Supporting those in private sector rented accommodation Animal welfare Public Health
6. Strategy & Innovation Project management Partnership Working Internal and external communications Graphic design IT
7. Community and Leisure Supporting Councilors Working with different community groups Managing the Lights theatre (Please note, we cannot offer placement experiences at The Lights during the month of July) Safeguarding our environment and green spaces Promoting sports and arts
8. Property and Asset Management Managing our car parks Taking care of the buildings owned by Test Valley Borough Council (including the Lights Theatre & the Crosfield Hall)
9. Planning Policy and Economic Development Tourism Regeneration work Supporting businesses across Test Valley Developing and carrying out a long-term plan for our local area
