Overview
Community & Family Learning Tutor at Essex County Council. Permanent, Part Time (18.5 hours per week; pro rata salary £15,188.50 per annum). Location: Chelmsford. Working Style: Anywhere worker. Salary: £25,821 to £30,377 per annum (full time equivalent). Closing Date: 16 September 2025.
The Role
This is a role within Adult Community Learning, Community and Family Learning (ACL) delivering a diverse range of courses to support parents and carers across Essex, including Parenting and SEND support, Early Years development, English and Maths, and other tailored subjects. Courses are delivered online and in-person at schools and community venues. Flexible hours include occasional evenings and school holiday sessions. You will build relationships with local schools and community organisations to reach those in need of support.
Responsibilities
* Prepare and deliver guided learning: produce appropriate schemes of work/lesson plans; promote effective use of individual learning plans; teach classes; provide tutorials and other supervised learning; produce resources.
* Promote and use technology to improve outcomes; support development of Maths and English; review progress and revise course planning; meet minimum standards for retention and success.
* Provide effective negotiated learning experiences enabling learners to meet their goals in an inclusive environment; challenge thinking and foster debate; develop learners’ ability to engage in critical discourse.
* Develop relationships with community organisations and schools; provide general information on course entry criteria, induction, progression opportunities and employability options; reference assessment procedures.
* Provide constructive feedback: review and evaluate lessons and courses; maintain Individual Learning Plans; offer information and guidance regarding progression routes; attend required meetings; conduct learner assessments in line with funding requirements.
* Monitor and record learners’ progress using learning plans and records; undertake mandatory Continuing Professional Development; actively participate in individual improvement plans and performance targets.
* Maintain accurate record-keeping (retention, achievement, completion, attendance) and manage absence; facilitate end-of-course evaluation.
* Actively support curriculum development, course promotion, self-assessment, complaint resolution; promote the Prevent Agenda, ECC & British values; comply with ACL Quality standards, Health & Safety, Safeguarding, Data Protection and GDPR.
Qualifications and Experience
* Educated to RQF Level 3 (GCSE A-C) in Maths and English; a relevant qualification or willingness to achieve the same.
* A relevant teaching qualification, or commit to achieving one within the first 2 years.
* Commitment to continuing professional development and subject updating; evidence of subject expertise appropriate to course level.
* Experience of Teaching and Learning in the Adult Sector; wider subject knowledge to support student progression.
* Knowledge of technology in supporting learning; competent in using technology for learning and data reporting.
* Ability to build strong collaborative relationships inside and outside the learning environment; excellent verbal and written communication skills.
