Maternity Medicines Management Technician

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated Pharmacy Technician to join our team, supporting delivery of our ward‑based clinical pharmacy services to patients within the women's centre.

In this role you will work alongside the clinical pharmacist to deliver medicines optimisation on the fast‑paced obstetrics wards at the John Radcliffe Hospital, including undertaking medicines reconciliation, supporting ward‑based dispensing of medication and ensuring safe and effective use of medicines at a ward level. This requires a good understanding of appropriate medicines management and a flexible approach to working.

This post is ideal for registered Pharmacy Technicians accredited in medicines management looking to build on their clinical experience, or newly qualified Pharmacy Technicians looking to start their career in a ward‑based role. Prior to starting, you must successfully hold the NVQ level 3 (QCF) or equivalent and be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). You must also be accredited in at least one of medicines management or accuracy checking; applicants currently undergoing NVQ level 3 including medicines management and accuracy checking are also welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

* To undertake medicines reconciliation for patients admitted to units within the Maternity and gynaecology wards.
* To improve the quality of clinical care to patients in the directorate by means of an efficient medicines management system, including the use of patients’ own drugs (PODs), facilitating efficient supply of medications (including original pack dispensing), near‑patient discharge systems and counselling patients about their medicines.
* To provide a clinical pharmacy service that ensures the safe and cost effective use of medications, including reviewing ward stock lists.
* To participate in the education and training of other members of the pharmacy and multidisciplinary teams.
* To participate in audits as per Trust requirements, for example Safe & Secure Storage of Medicines and Controlled Drug audits.
* To be an active member of the Pharmacy department and Clinical Team ensuring continuous two‑way exchange of information to maintain high standards with the Trust.

Person Specification – Essential and Desirable

* Qualified Pharmacy Technician with an NVQ3 in Pharmaceutical Science, or equivalent
* Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
* Qualified as an Accredited Accuracy Checking Technician
* Accredited in Medicines Management and/or Medicines Reconciliation
* Experience of providing a ward‑based pharmacy service
* Demonstrable time management and organisational skills
* Enthusiastic, adaptable, flexible and able to demonstrate an ability to work independently, and as part of a team, under pressure
* Able to demonstrate using own initiative appropriately
* Appropriately assertive and confident
* Demonstrable written and verbal communication skills
* Willing to travel between sites
* Previous experience of working in appropriate clinical area
* Experience of near‑patient ward based medicines management service
* Experience of using Patient's Own Drugs as per policy
* Accredited to validate homecare prescriptions
* Accredited to perform patient blood monitoring
* Understanding and experience of extended pharmacy technician roles
* Experience of teaching/training others
* Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office
* Experience of working with clinical trials, practice research or auditing
* NVQ Assessor
