Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialist

To support the provision of Level 2b Haematology services ensuring a coordinated, comprehensive and holistic service for patients with a Haematological diagnosis. The Haematology Nurse Specialist will be an integral member of the multiprofessional team providing specialist nursing support for staff, patients and their carers. They will support the multiprofessional team in the implementation of novel SACT regimens, new commercial and non-commercial clinical trials, be keyworker for patients with a Haematological malignancy throughout the disease trajectory, undertake nurse‑led follow‑up clinics with consultant oversight, liaise with referral hospitals and units treating intensive therapy including CAR T cell therapy, stem cell and bone marrow transplantation. They will facilitate links between Trust hospitals and community to ensure continuity of care and work with the Lead Haematology Nurse and MHDC team to deliver an excellent patient‑focused service.
Job Responsibilities
* Ensure a high standard of care based on the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, identifying priorities and realistic goals involving patients, their carers and the multi‑professional team.
* Be knowledgeable of treatment regimens and side effects of haematology‑related treatments and adopt a problem‑solving approach to managing potential complications.
* Support the medical team in bone marrow and lumbar puncture investigations and participate in the safe administration of intrathecal chemotherapy, providing the nurse‑checking role in line with national and Trust policies.
* Carry out practical clinic tasks, providing all required care and supervision for blood transfusions and other intravenous treatments.
* Coordinate care for patients with neutropenia, establishing links with other Trust areas involved in their care.
* Organise workload to reflect core components of the Nurse Specialist role, allowing time for patient contact, service management, education of patients and staff, and participation in local and network groups.
* Act as the key worker for patients, collaborating with them, MDT members and other services to provide access to services and information and promote continuity along the treatment pathway.
* Ensure safe administration and storage of Systemic Anti‑Cancer Therapy (SACT) and supervise and teach junior staff.
* Assist junior staff in completion and assessment of the UKONS SACT passport.
* Ensure all relevant investigations are carried out prior to chemotherapy administration and complete all necessary documentation; coordinate treatment based on pre‑treatment investigations.
* Coordinate the service for patients, facilitating effective communication within the multi‑professional team to ensure care is delivered along agreed pathways, including liaison with consultants, attendance at clinics, fast‑tracking disease recurrence and establishing a non‑urgent/urgent contact advice service.
* Support the Lead Haematology Nurse in providing protocols and guidelines for haematology patient care, ensuring nursing colleagues are aware and able to work within them.
* Receive and provide patients and families with emotionally sensitive information, using empathy, reassurance and counselling skills; attend to patients when given diagnosis or bad news.
* Act as a resource person in specific skills/care for patients, carers and other multi‑professional team members.
* Promote professional development through research and evidence‑based practice.
* Maintain accurate documentation and collate data as required by the multi‑professional team.
* Undertake specific projects as requested by the Nursing Services Manager or MDT Lead Clinician.
* Establish and undertake nurse‑led follow‑up clinics, creating SOPs and MDT processes to ensure safe patient management.
* Implement patient‑initiated follow‑up (PIFU) into practice alongside the Haematology MDT team.
Person Specification
* Administration of Systemic Anti‑Cancer Therapy module.
* Registered NMC Nurse.
* At least 3 years post‑graduation Nursing experience.
* Haematology/Oncology Nursing experience.
* Level 2 psychology training.
* Bone Marrow Aspirate and Trephine course completed.
