Paediatric Emergency Nurse Practitioner

Closing date: 28 April 2026

The Paediatric Emergency Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital and the Children's Urgent Care Centre at South Tyneside are looking to recruit an experienced nurse practitioner to join our established and highly valued team of Paediatric Emergency Nurse Practitioners in our state of the art facilities.

The post will allow you to develop your assessment, diagnostic and patient management skills within the Paediatric Emergency Department, Children's Short Stay Assessment Unit and Children's Urgent Care Centre, and you will be involved in all aspects of care for children with conditions ranging from minor trauma to major medical presentations.

This is an exciting time for individual development as we respond to the evolving demand of urgent and emergency care delivery across Sunderland and South Tyneside. The post holder will be based at Sunderland Royal Hospital but will rotate between the Paediatric Emergency Department at SRH and the Children's Urgent Care Unit at South Tyneside District Hospital on a regular basis to enhance their skills and knowledge in care delivery to children requiring non-urgent, urgent and emergency treatment.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be joining a team of over 70 experienced nurse practitioners, qualified nurses and health care assistants who see and treat more than 40,000 patients across both sites each year, and will be responsible for assessing, diagnosing and treating children with a wide range of clinical conditions including both medical and trauma cases. You will work alongside ENPs, consultants and junior doctors from a range of training programmes including paediatric emergency medicine, paediatrics and adult emergency medicine.

Applicants who demonstrate a high level of motivation and possess an excellent and wide ranging standard of clinical skills are invited to apply for this post. The successful candidate will demonstrate a friendly, honest and caring attitude and should be intent on delivering a high quality service to children and their families within the emergency and urgent care environment across the gamut of minor injury to the critically unwell child. Previous experience is desirable and education/supervision opportunities are available to develop skills and knowledge within a competency framework.

Job responsibilities

Training will be provided through a structured teaching programme and you will be supported by a PEM Consultant Clinical Supervisor. You will be expected to rotate between the Paediatric Emergency Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital and the Children's Urgent Care Department at South Tyneside District Hospital. The Paediatric Emergency Department provides a 24 hour ENP service and the Urgent Care Centre a 7 day a week 8am‑11pm service; therefore applicants must be able to demonstrate a reliable work record and flexibility in working hours. Previous post registration experience of working in a Paediatric Emergency Department or similar environment is essential.
