The OMFS H&N team in ELHT is looking to appoint a Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial H&N Surgeon, with an interest in Head and Neck Cancer ablation and reconstruction. The successful candidate will join a vibrant, diverse, and motivated team of clinicians, with national/international reputation and an established practice based on quality of outcomes. The local demand for OMFS H&N surgery makes the unit one of the busiest in the Northwest. The successful candidate will be a core member of the dedicated weekly Lancashire & South Cumbria H&N MDT, which covers a population of over 2.5 million patients.
Main duties of the job
We wish to appoint a Locum Consultant with a special interest in Head and Neck. This is a locum post within the department to support the delivery of our cancer service across Head and Neck. It is envisaged that the successful applicant will also offer general Oral & Maxillofacial services to the Trust and develop other interests mutually acceptable to the successful applicants and the department. The three B’s area, covering Bolton, Burnley, and Blackburn, serves approximately 1 million people. The Maxillofacial inpatient and trauma work are based at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. Outpatient and Daycase surgery are carried out at all three hospital sites. The service is currently delivered by a team of eight Consultants in Maxillofacial Surgery, indicating an expansion of the consultant establishment.

The ELHT OMFS H&N service covers Bolton, Burnley, and Blackburn, serving around 1 million people. Outpatient clinics and Day Case surgery are available at all three sites. Inpatient work, including major H&N surgery, is carried out at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, supported by a dedicated surgical ICU. We pride ourselves on providing an uninterrupted H&N cancer service throughout the COVID pandemic and have an established ERAS H&N pathway. Our OMFS H&N team works closely with the ENT H&N team in ELHT, collaborating on joint operations when necessary. Our vision is to be recognized for providing safe, personal, and effective care, treating over 700,000 patients annually with a staff of over 8,000, many of whom are internationally renowned and award-winning.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will undertake clinical commitments across Royal Blackburn, Burnley General Hospital, and Royal Bolton Hospital. They will participate in the consultant on-call rota and develop a subspecialty interest to complement existing team members. A proposed job plan will be agreed within three months of starting. The team has strong links with the University of Central Lancashire and is involved in national/international committees, research publications, invited lectures, and clinical trials. The successful applicant will be encouraged to participate in education, research, and service innovation, with support for developing new patient services.
