Job Description:
About the Role
This is a fixed term contract role for up to 18 months. Please note internally this role is known as "Senior Buyer".
The National Physical Laboratory sets standards that measure everything. Our work helps combat global issues like climate change, disease cures, and advanced communications technology. As a Senior Buyer, you'll ensure our products, materials, and services provide value for money while maintaining quality.
What you'll be doing:
You will oversee a portfolio of products, materials, or services throughout the entire purchasing process—from tendering to order placement. Managing and negotiating with suppliers and building relationships are key. You will monitor orders to ensure timely delivery, cost-effectiveness, and quality, updating procurement systems accordingly. Resolving queries and issues, and developing your skills in line with legislative changes are also important. We support a hybrid working model with flexible options depending on the role and department.
About You:
You should be CIPS qualified or have equivalent experience. You are a team player, numerate, commercially astute, organized, and a skilled negotiator.
Skills and experience you can bring to the role:
* MCIPS or equivalent qualification
* Experience in Public Sector Buying and understanding of Procurement Regulations and The Procurement Act
* Proven public procurement experience and familiarity with Frameworks
* Experience with procurement systems and E-tendering portals like Bravo Solutions
* Experience in high-value capital procurement
* Strong negotiation skills at high levels
* Ability to deliver procurement benefits including savings
* Excellent prioritization and communication skills
* Ability to handle ambiguity and change
Applications are reviewed continuously, and interviews may be scheduled before the closing date. We encourage prompt applications.
Additional Information: We welcome candidates from all backgrounds. Due to the nature of our work, nationality, residency, and security requirements may apply. We are committed to diversity and inclusion, and encourage applications from women, disabled, and minority candidates. Candidates meeting minimum criteria will be guaranteed an interview under the Disability Confident Scheme.
At NPL, our success depends on the talent and diversity of our team. We foster an inclusive environment and are dedicated to supporting our employees’ well-being with flexible working and social activities.
