The Henry Moore Foundation, established by one of the greatest sculptors of the twentieth century, presents Moore's work at his former home and studios in the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, near Bishops Stortford, and provides a centre for the study of sculpture at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds.
We are seeking an Assistant Art Technician to join the Collections and Exhibitions department. The role involves working closely with a dedicated team of technical, registrarial, and curatorial staff. You will assist the technical and conservation team in caring for the Foundation's collections, mainly sculpture and works on paper, and in installing exhibitions in the UK and overseas.
About The Role
1. Care for the collections and maintain sculptures on display in the grounds, including cleaning and assisting with patination maintenance.
2. Conduct condition reporting on artworks across all media, from monumental bronzes to carvings and works on paper, documenting all actions in The Museum System (TMS) database.
3. Prepare sites and outdoor pedestals at Henry Moore Studios and Gardens (HMS and G).
4. Assist with the movement and installation of outdoor works at HMS and G.
5. Help prepare and restore works for upcoming exhibitions.
6. Prepare packing crates and materials for shipments of works on loan or touring.
7. Occasionally courier artworks within the UK and overseas.
8. Work as part of the installation team for exhibitions in the UK and abroad.
9. Install works in all media, primarily sculpture and drawings.
10. Assist with the maintenance and installation of outdoor security devices for artworks.
11. Liaise and collaborate with external builders when required.
12. Maintain storage areas and ensure safe working practices and tidiness in workshops and studios.
13. Manage the maintenance of tools and PPE, which are provided.
14. Perform any other duties reasonably required.
Required - About You
* Enthusiasm for modern sculpture in all its forms.
* Educated to A Level standard or equivalent vocational qualification, apprenticeship, or certification.
* Willingness to learn and apply new techniques through training or on-the-job experience.
* Comfortable with hands-on, practical work involving physical activity, and confident in handling artworks safely.
* Value cleanliness and orderliness to support a safe work environment.
* Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize tasks.
* Competent in using hand and power tools safely.
* Excellent attention to visual detail.
* Proactive, adaptable, and open to new challenges.
* Enjoy working collaboratively in a team environment.
* Willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, for exhibition installations.
* Comfortable engaging with visitors, colleagues, and stakeholders, representing the Foundation positively.
Desired
* Experience or volunteering in galleries, museums, or creative environments, especially with installation or technical tasks.
* Vocational experience with materials like metal, wood, or stone, or relevant qualifications.
* Knowledge of relevant technical skills and materials.
