Family Support Practitioner - Identified Role

$70,299- $75,923 + Super + Salary Sacrifice

To perform this role it is essential that the incumbent is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.


About Us

The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health Ltd provides a coordinated approach to planning, development and delivery of comprehensive primary health care services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations within the Southeast Queensland region. BECS (Birthing and Early Childhood Services) aims to support women, infants and families from preconception through early childhood, with programs including BiOC (Birthing in Our Community), the Australian Family Partnership Program (AFPP), and the Deadly Fit Mums exercise program. The BiOC program offers women access to a known midwife and a family support worker throughout pregnancy and up to three years postpartum, supported by an Indigenous workforce strategy in a culturally-safe, Aboriginal Community Controlled hub.


About the Role

Integrated within a family services model grounded in a culturally intrinsic parenting framework that supports connection, belonging and cultural growth. The purpose of this position is to provide social and emotional support and health education to women and family members throughout pregnancy and up to three years following birth. The role also involves collaborating with other social and health practitioners to identify and access appropriate services for the family.


Responsibilities

* Create a pathway for culturally respectful engagement between women, midwives, and other service providers
* Work closely with women and their families to identify social and emotional wellbeing needs to achieve optimal outcomes for mother and baby
* Facilitate access for women to attend antenatal appointments as arranged by MGP midwives/obstetrician
* Conduct psychosocial assessments and collaboratively develop and maintain social and emotional wellbeing plans
* Provide support in the instance of pregnancy loss or traumatic birth


Qualifications

About You

* Current Blue Card
* Current First Aid Certificate
* Current Criminal History Check or willingness to obtain
* Current C Class Drivers Licence (Qld)
* Willingness to travel between IUIH sites as required


Desirable

* Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and/or communities
